Fishing in New Bern

Fishing in New Bern, NC can be as laid-back or challenging as you make it. The city is located right where the Neuse River joins the Trent River. Here, the current slows down and the riverbed becomes one of the widest in the US. All of this makes conditions just right for a variety of fish species to inhabit the river year round. This fishing heaven attracts anglers of all skill levels, including complete novices.

Inshore trips close to New Bern will take you after Redfish, Black Drum, Speckled Trout, Flounder, and Striped Bass. As you won’t go too far from your departure point, you can catch lots of fish even on a half day trip. Some guides focus on trophy-sized fish and offer specialized trips for one species only, such as Redfish or Black Drum.

Head a few miles downstream, and target bigger saltwater species. Nearshore trips can get you Kingfish, Spanish Mackerel, Mako Shark, Cobia, and Little Tunny. These trips are more season-dependent and are best during summer.

Feeling competitive? Test your luck and skill in one of the local fishing tournaments. In July, anglers compete in catching Redfish, in September they are trying to land the biggest Bass, and in October they gather for the annual NRBWO fishing tournament. Join a local guide who has all the local tricks up his sleeve, catch a few fish, and you may even earn a prize in the end!

New Bern Fishing Seasons

January
Black Drum and Redfish are the best species to go after at the beginning of the year. Spotted Seatrout isn’t far behind either.

February
Have you ever caught a Redfish on a fly?! Level up your game and try it out. Make sure to check if your guide provides fly fishing equipment.

March
More and more Stripers are gathering in the area, so get ready for some action. Catch them by trolling, jigging, or fly fishing.

April
If Kingfish and Spanish Mackerel sound like a fun catch, head nearshore for a full day adventure!

May
Silver King on a fly?! Catch the amazing Tarpon with this challenging technique. It’s worth the effort.

June
Spanish Mackerel and Kingfish are waiting for you in the nearshore waters. Cobia and Flounder also guarantee an exciting trip.

July
In July, the city hosts the Carolina Redfish Series tournament! Team up with a local guide and catch the biggest Redfish you can find in the Neuse River.

August
Taking a long, nearshore trip is still a good choice, as you can find lots of Mackerel and Cobia. Inshore fishing never really fails here!

September
There’s a good reason local guides specialize in catching Bass: the Neuse River Bassmaster Tournament. Are you up for a challenge?

October
Carolina anglers gather in New Bern for the annual NRBWO tournament. Join the game or, if you prefer, ignore the hype and take a fishing trip just for yourself.

November
Redfish, Spotted Seatrout, and Black Drum rule the river again. With colder temperatures, nearshore fishing slows down.

December
Catching Little Tunny is a good choice if you really want to go to deeper water. But Redfish, Black Drum, and Trout fishing inshore is still the best action around.
