Ocean Isle Beach has access to some of the best fishing on the East Coast! With the variety of species that call these waters home, you’ll be able to find action year-round. From easy-going, family charters, to adrenaline-filled offshore adventures – local captains have it all. Just get in touch with a charter of your liking and you’ll be exploring the area’s hotspots in no time!

Inshore fanatics will be in paradise at Ocean Isle Beach. Depending on the target, your captain may take you to the island’s marshes and creeks, the Intracoastal Waterway, or the Shallotte and Tubbs Inlets where the bite can get scorching hot! Go after the “Inshore Big Three” of Redfish, Spotted Seatrout, and Flounder or land some tasty Black Drum and Sheepshead.

However, the fun certainly doesn’t stop beyond the inlets. Nearshore trips will allow you to test your skills against some hard-fighting fish such as Kingfish, Spanish Mackerel, Cobia, and Sharks. Local wrecks and artificial reefs will allow you the chance to bottom fish for species like Gag Grouper and Snapper, while the nearby Gulf Stream brings by pelagics like Mahi Mahi and Amberjack.

Once you get here, finding the right charter is no hard task. The local marina is full of experienced captains that fish year-round. Depending on your preference, you’ll be able to find charters that specialize in following the inshore bite or you can opt for a Gulf Stream excursion. Either way, you won’t miss out on the action.

Rules & Regulations

Before going fishing, you’ll need to make sure that you have all the necessary licenses covered. All anglers over the age of 16 need to have a valid license to go fishing. However, you don’t need to worry about this on charters, here the captain’s license has got you covered.

January

Start the year off with some great inshore fishing. Go casting for Redfish, Sheepshead, and Speckled Trout among others. Alternatively, take a trip to the nearshore bottom fishing spots and land a tasty catch.

February

The bulk of the action remains inshore in February with Black Seabass, Sheepshead, Speckled Trout, and Redfish being the prime targets. However, if you’re feeling lucky, you might be able to get a chance to test it offshore.

March

March marks the beginning of the offshore action heating up. Large bottom fish are getting more active and prized pelagic species are coming by in larger numbers. The inshore bite is on the upswing as well.

April

With the first warmer month comes your chance of hooking prized species such as Mahi Mahi, Kingfish, Wahoo, and Tuna. Inshore, your chances of a highly productive trip are quickly increasing as well.

May

Whatever you’re looking to target is likely to be available in May. From Trout and Redfish in the island’s creeks and marshes to the trophy fish waiting for those venturing out to the deep waters offshore.

June

The water’s heating up and so is the action! Depending on the fishing grounds you chose to visit, the fish you’ll be hooking can range from Spanish Mackerel to Tuna. If you’re looking to catch a Shark, this is the prime month for it.

July

In the middle of summer it’s all about getting out to the Gulf stream in search of Wahoo, Tuna, Sailfish, and Marlin. If you still prefer to stick to the inshore waters, you’ll be able to have your pick from all the local species.

August

It’s still great fishing all around the island. Deep sea species are still available in solid numbers and the backwater bite is as good as it gets. August is hurricane season, so just keep an eye out for that.

September

The beginning of fall means that inshore fishing is becoming the main attraction again with large Redfish starting to move to the backwaters. This doesn’t mean the end of offshore action, however, since Wahoo, Tuna, and others are still around.

October

Stripers, Speckled Trout, Redfish and other inshore species are all waiting to be challenged in the fall months. Offshore, there are still battles to be fought as well, just take your pick.

November

With the offshore season nearing its end this month, the island belongs entirely to the inshore anglers. The inshore bite is still strong and the prizes are everywhere.

December

If the winter weather doesn’t pose a challenge for you, the island’s inshore waters will reward you with prizes like Speckled Trout, Bluefish, and Redfish.

If it's raining and windy, don't go. Even the people fishing from the pier caught very little.

Got action early with trout and then steady reds all day. Huge flounder but we have to let them go, via regulations. Trip is a pleasant person to go fishing with. Shall do again when we get back there.

Johnny was a great guide. He tried really hard to find a good place to fish. Only problem was the weather (rainy) and the wind was also a factor. I'd book with him again, hands down.

Was my husband me 40th and he loves catching and eating fish! He room is to a place the red drum were biting, We caught 3 but had to release due to being to large but it was fun with the fight! Only parts I wish were better was if the captain was a little more engaged and talked more and that we could have taken home dinner but that wasn’t his fault :-)

My buddy and I went out with Tripp for a 4 hour afternoon trip. We quickly found the spotted trout and caught our fill so we moved to try and find some reds and ended up catching a huge stingray, what blast! I’ll definitely book with Tripp again anytime I’m in the area.

Capt. Hunter got us right on some flounder to start the day and then after we caught our limit, got us onto some Spanish mackerel. Definitely is knowledgeable of the surrounding area and can get you on some fish no matter the time of year. If you have any doubts of who to book, it’s dockside fishing charters!

Three of us went out on the afternoon trip. We had to catch some bait fish before we could start fishing. This took a while but the captain made up for it by letting us fish a little longer. The fish bite dropped off in the afternoon from the morning trip. Matt in our group was able to catch a 8.3 pound Spanish Mackeral. Everyone caught a fish. But they were smaller. The seas were great and weather was great.
