Fishing in Ocean Isle Beach

Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina, stands as a premier fishing destination along the East Coast, offering diverse angling experiences across its barrier island landscapes. This area is renowned for year-round fishing excellence, with protected backwaters, accessible piers, and nearshore reefs creating ideal habitats for trophy species. Anglers target the "Inshore Big Three"—Redfish, Speckled Trout, and Flounder—in shallow marshes like Jinks Creek and Saucepan Creek, while the Intracoastal Waterway yields Black Drum and Sheepshead.

Nearshore adventures thrive around artificial reefs and wrecks, where King Mackerel, Spanish Mackerel, and Cobia dominate summer months. Winter shifts focus to Sea Bass and Trout near structures like the Little River Jetties, known for Bull Redfish runs each fall. For offshore enthusiasts, the Gulf Stream brings pelagics including Mahi Mahi, Tuna, and Sailfish within reach of charter expeditions. The iconic Ocean Isle Beach Pier provides easy access to species like Spanish Mackerel and Bluefish, complemented by surf fishing opportunities along sandy shores.

Local charters cater to all skill levels, from family-friendly inshore trips to adrenaline-fueled offshore battles. With expert captains navigating hotspots from Shallotte Inlet to deep Atlantic waters, every expedition promises action. Ocean Isle Beach delivers consistent bites across seasons: spring awakens King Mackerel; summer peaks with diversity; fall lures trophy Bull Redfish; and winter surprises with sheltered water action. This destination merges accessibility with world-class variety, cementing its status as a must-visit angling hub.

Ocean Isle Beach Fishing Seasons

January

Start the year off with some great inshore fishing. Go casting for Redfish, Sheepshead, and Speckled Trout among others. Alternatively, take a trip to the nearshore bottom fishing spots and land a tasty catch.

February

The bulk of the action remains inshore in February with Black Seabass, Sheepshead, Speckled Trout, and Redfish being the prime targets. However, if you’re feeling lucky, you might be able to get a chance to test it offshore.

March

March marks the beginning of the offshore action heating up. Large bottom fish are getting more active and prized pelagic species are coming by in larger numbers. The inshore bite is on the upswing as well.

April

With the first warmer month comes your chance of hooking prized species such as Mahi Mahi, Kingfish, Wahoo, and Tuna. Inshore, your chances of a highly productive trip are quickly increasing as well.

May

Whatever you’re looking to target is likely to be available in May. From Trout and Redfish in the island’s creeks and marshes to the trophy fish waiting for those venturing out to the deep waters offshore.

June

The water’s heating up and so is the action! Depending on the fishing grounds you chose to visit, the fish you’ll be hooking can range from Spanish Mackerel to Tuna. If you’re looking to catch a Shark, this is the prime month for it.

July

In the middle of summer it’s all about getting out to the Gulf stream in search of Wahoo, Tuna, Sailfish, and Marlin. If you still prefer to stick to the inshore waters, you’ll be able to have your pick from all the local species.

August

It’s still great fishing all around the island. Deep sea species are still available in solid numbers and the backwater bite is as good as it gets. August is hurricane season, so just keep an eye out for that.

September

The beginning of fall means that inshore fishing is becoming the main attraction again with large Redfish starting to move to the backwaters. This doesn’t mean the end of offshore action, however, since Wahoo, Tuna, and others are still around.

October

Stripers, Speckled Trout, Redfish and other inshore species are all waiting to be challenged in the fall months. Offshore, there are still battles to be fought as well, just take your pick.

November

With the offshore season nearing its end this month, the island belongs entirely to the inshore anglers. The inshore bite is still strong and the prizes are everywhere.

December

If the winter weather doesn’t pose a challenge for you, the island’s inshore waters will reward you with prizes like Speckled Trout, Bluefish, and Redfish.
