Fishing in Margate City

Fishing in Margate is diverse and offers a wide range of options for all types of anglers. From relaxing inshore trips to overnight deep sea excursions, Margate fishing charters are ready to take you on the adventure of a lifetime.

Top Fishing Spots

Whether you're looking to catch Flounder in the Lakes Bay or go after big Tuna out past the Canyons, you’ll definitely find something that suits your preferences.

Inshore

Margate City’s inshore waters are ideal for introductory level fishing trips. Its calm and protected waters host a variety of species, making it a perfect place to learn new techniques and solidify your skills.

Places like Absecon, Reeds, and Lakes Bay are prime locations for inshore fishing. These sheltered waters are home to a wide range of species, including Flounder, Weakfish, Striped Bass, Spotted Seatrout, and Bluefish. The best part about these trips is that it doesn’t take long to find the right spot. A four-hour trip is more than enough time to locate fish and get hooked, making it a great option for a family trip with the kids.

Reefs and Wrecks

If you’re looking to explore the deeper waters of the Atlantic, Margate fishing charters offer lots of nearshore and offshore trips as well.

The Atlantic City Reef is located about 14 miles off the coast of Margate. This reef system produces an abundance of aquatic life, making it an excellent place for bottom fishing. Your top-target species here are Black Seabass, Stripers, Fluke, Tautog, and many more.

If you head 14 miles further, you’ll have the chance to fish over a sunken WWII oil tanker, known as the 28 Mile Wreck. This area is a popular fishing spot for those looking to target big game species such as Yellowfin Tuna, Mahi Mahi, Amberjack, and various Shark species. A summer trip out here can reap lots of rewarding catches. If you’re a deep sea fanatic, it’d be a shame not to check this spot out!

The Canyons

If you’re planning on taking a trip out to the Canyons, be sure to set enough time aside. Captains recommend at least 16 hours for a successful trip. Overnight charters are a great option and Margate’s got a large fleet to choose from. Out here, you can expect to target Blue and White Marlin, Bluefin Tuna, Swordfish, Mako Shark, and Wahoo, just to name a few.

Need to Know

Margate charters will cover your fishing license. If you plan on fishing alone however, you’ll have to purchase one before your trip. You can do so online, over the phone, at a local tackle store, or sporting goods store.

Be sure to pack sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses, comfortable clothing, and dramamine if you’re planning to head offshore.

The best time to go fishing in Margate City is between April and October, with the peak lasting from June to August. With a range of options to choose from, you’ll be one step closer to experiencing the Jersey shore like never before. Pick your charter, invite the family, and start planning your next adventure today!

Margate City Fishing Seasons

January

There’s a long way to go until summer and most game fish have left town for warmer waters. However, you might get lucky and catch a few Cod offshore. Striper fishing in the Lakes and Absecon Bay is also a great way to snap you out of the winter funk.

February

If you’re into boating, be sure to check out the Atlantic City Boat show happening right next door in Atlantic City. There’s also solid bay fishing at this time, specifically for Porgy and the occasional Striper as well.

March

The New Jersey fishing season kicks off and Margate City is one of the hot spots. Offshore, you can target Mako Shark and even the occasional Hammerhead. Cod fishing remains solid throughout the beginning of March, so be sure to hop on a charter and get a piece of the action!

April

Tautog come out in full force and last throughout May. Bluefish start their spring feeding as water temperatures increase. Flounder fishing starts to pick up in the shallow parts of the bays as well.

May

As Tautog fishing winds down, Black Seabass season begins. Fluke and Striper fishing are solid in May, as well as Spotted Seatrout and Weakfish.

June

Head up the coast to Tuckerton, NJ and check out Baymen’s Annual Seafood & Music Festival to sample some local catch. If you’d rather snag your own lunch, pick a charter that will take you Black Seabass fishing around structures, such as rocks, reefs, and wrecks.

July

Tuna fishing kicks into high gear, so be sure to hop on a charter that will take you deep sea fishing. Top targets include Yellowfin, Little Tunny, Albacore, and the prestigious Bluefin Tuna.

August

Marlin fishing is at its peak, so take an overnight trip out to the Canyons and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime! Aside from Blue and White Marlin, you may also encounter other Billfish such as Swordfish.

September

Offshore fishing remains hot with likely catches from Mahi Mahi, Amberjack, Marlin, Swordfish, and Tuna. Staying closer to shore isn’t a bad idea either. Grab the kids and fish the calm waters of the Lakes Bay to target Striped Bass, Weakfish, Porgy, and Flounder.

October

Summer is over and the kids are back in school. This is the perfect month to grab some alone time and plan a nice relaxing trip with your favorite fishing buddies. You can target Black Seabass around nearshore structures, Striped Bass in the bay, and Weakfish in shallow flats.

November

Temperatures have cooled down a lot but Tautog and Seabass fishing remains hot! November is also a great time to target Striped Bass and Winter Flounder.

December

Christmas lights illuminate the boardwalk and the whole town is full of holiday cheer. Although most fish are lethargic at this time, you can still celebrate the winter festivities with some Striper action in the bay.
