Fishing in Staten Island

Surrounded by rivers and bays, Staten Island is New York City’s prime fishing destination. Hit the shallow waters to tackle some of the East Coast’s favorite fish, or use it as a base to go offshore. With the free ferry from downtown Manhattan taking just 25 minutes, there’s no excuse not to come fishing in Staten Island!

The Upper and Lower Bays are all that you can explore aboard some charters out of the city, but a Staten Island fishing charter will take you to the Raritan Bay too. Get your hands on delicious Fluke, Porgy, Seabass, and Weakfish, along with monster Striped Bass, and head home with some of these waters’ greatest prizes.

The more extreme among you can hit the depths of the Atlantic and go after that trophy catch, as you troll for the bite of Bluefin and Yellowfin Tuna, Cod, Cobia, Mahi Mahi, and more.

For these offshore adventures, a full day trip is a must. Both beginners and experts alike are welcome aboard half-day trips, as productive waters close to shore mean that maxing out is a possibility. If it’s your first time, you’ll get a feel for the water as you learn the ropes, while avid anglers can go after plenty of prized fish.

Whatever you choose, you’re in for a thrilling experience with everything you need on board. Come escape the city and engage in some of the East Coast’s finest fishing!

Rules & Regulations

When fishing aboard a saltwater charter in New York, your fishing license will be covered. Your professional captain will keep you in line with all the latest bag limits and seasons too, but just beware that the Striped Bass season doesn’t kick in until April 15.

Staten Island Fishing Seasons

January
There aren’t many captains braving the waters at the start of the year, so you’d better look elsewhere for some fun. Why not take advantage of the last chance to engage in Staten Island’s Winter Lantern Festival?
February
The choppy waters and closed fishing season mean that you’ll struggle to find a charter in February, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do. Take the time to learn about the island’s rich maritime history.
March
The most eager captains will start to head to sea come March, so come aboard and get ready for the upcoming season. Practice catch and release on Stripers, or go after whatever Bluefish you can find.
April
With the opening of the Striper season, there’s a flurry of activity on the rich bays around NYC. Get out and join the party as you go after a monster Bass, hoping to land one to take home for a tasty treat.
May
Join the Raritan Bay Bass Tournament to test your angling skills against the best in the region, but don’t forget about the rest. More and more doors open with the start of the season, so go after plenty more fish.
June
There’s a reason that anglers flock to the seaside in summer. The calmer waters provide a great chance to get offshore, so head to the deep waters and battle it out with some big game giants to land a trophy catch.
July
You won’t know where to look when July comes, as peak season hits its stride. Target a range of fish in the bays or head offshore for a deep sea fishing adventure, as you have the pick of the fishing to yourself.
August
School’s out, so why not introduce the kids to a healthy outdoor activity? Hop aboard a four- or six-hour charter in the bays, and land anything from Fluke and Spadefish to Striped Bass and Mackerel.
September
Hit the bays to fill the freezer with delicious fish. The last of the Summer Fluke season combines with the start of the Tautog term to give you plenty to target. Come and extend the summer!
October
Inshore and nearshore season has come around once again, with monster Striped Bass tempting you to sea. Come aboard and target these beauties along with Bluefish, Seabass, and many more.
November
Tautog and Stripers rule supreme as the season draws to a close. Get out on the water before the weather changes and reel enough in to last the long winter, when you won’t have the chance to fish.
December
Realistically, you’ll only have half the month to go fishing in Staten Island. Don’t miss out on your last chance for a few months, and make the most of the last of the Striped Bass season on a thrilling trip.
