Fishing in Eugene

Fishing in Eugene, Oregon, is a freshwater fisherman’s idea of paradise. After all, where else could be a better place to cast your line than the southern end of the Willamette Valley, where the McKenzie and Willamette Rivers meet?

If you’re a fan of Salmon, you’re in luck – it’s possible to catch Chum, Chinook, and Coho in these waters. Eugene’s section of the McKenzie River boasts excellent fishing for spring Chinook Salmon, as well as Steelhead. The lower Willamette River is home to an impressive amount of Coho Salmon, with September–October being the prime time to hook them.

The area between the McKenzie River and the Coast Fork is a long-favored spot for Steelhead fishermen. The summer run starts in late spring, with the last Steelhead hanging around until fall. For Trout enthusiasts, Rainbow and Cutthroat varieties can be found where the McKenzie River leads into the Willamette River – it’s often considered one of the best Trout streams in Oregon!

A great fishing experience in Eugene often depends on getting your timing and location right, and the best way to do this is with an experienced guide. You’ll find four- and eight-hour trips, which are usually targeted towards one specific species. It’s common for guides to organize their trips depending on the spring, fall, and winter runs of certain species, too. So choose your target fish, grab your rods and reels, and get ready to see what fishing in Eugene has to offer!

Rules & Regulations

Local rules and regulations differ greatly depending on the body of water you’re fishing. Casting your line alongside a local guide who knows the lay of the land means you’ll be fishing safely and legally for your chosen species, as well as being equipped with top-quality fishing gear. All you need to do is make sure you bring along a valid Oregon fishing license.

Eugene Fishing Seasons

January

Start your year off in the right way by heading to the McKenzie River for some Trout fishing! You’ll be able to target Rainbow and Cutthroat varieties. Winter Steelhead can be hooked around the Willamette River, too.

February

The first handful of spring Chinook start to appear in the Willamette River, and Steelhead can be found in the lower section of the river. Trout fishing remains strong.

March
March usually means the start of a spring Chinook bonanza! Target this species in the lower Willamette River for a seriously productive trip. Steelhead and Trout fishing during this time is nothing to sniff at, either.

April

April is the clear winner when it comes to picking a month for chasing spring Chinook Salmon! Head to the lower part of the Willamette River right near Eugene, and you’ll find plenty to hook into.

May

Chinook Salmon fishing remains seriously strong on both the Willamette and McKenzie Rivers. Summer Steelhead start to make an appearance, and Trout varieties can be spotted in both the rivers and local ponds.

June

It's time for a Trout fishing bonanza! Eugene’s lakes, streams, and ponds are bustling with different varieties of this fish. Summer Steelhead can be hooked in the rivers, and Chinook Salmon are still going strong.

July

Trout fishing in general begins to slow down, but is plentiful as ever in the McKenzie River. The Steelhead summer run is going full blast, with the Willamette River yielding especially spectacular results.

August

Trout fishing in the McKenzie River remains strong. Steelhead start to vacate the many tributaries leading off the Willamette River, so head to the lower section of this fishery for the best results.

September

If you’re looking to hook Salmon species, both Chum and Coho varieties make an appearance this month. For anglers still wanting to target the Steelhead summer run, the lower Willamette River yields plentiful results.

October

For Salmon fanatics, October is a great month to visit: Coho fishing in the lower Willamette River remains seriously strong, and Chum can be hooked here, too.

November

As the weather cools down, the fishing does slightly, too. The waters are much quieter, making this the perfect time of year to indulge in some fly fishing! Head to the MacKenzie River, where you’ll find plenty of Trout varieties.

December

End your year with some top freshwater fishing action! Head to the lower Willamette River, where you’ll find the winter run of Steelhead starting to make an appearance. Trout fishing in the McKenzie River remains strong.
