Newport Fishing Seasons
January
You can expect plenty of rain at the start of the year, but don't let that put a damper on your plans! Wait for a break in the downpour and bring home tasty Crab or Lingcod.
February
February is a great time to cast a line from shore. Herring and Surfperch are spawning in the bay, and there's also a chance to catch a few Crabs if you look in the right place.
March
The first of the migratory Salmon are appearing, and the action offshore will be heating up soon. You can still expect rainfall for about half of the month.
April
The spring Salmon run is underway, making this a great time fish for Chinook. Crabbing is available, although it isn't at its height this month, but you can expect great Rockfishing as usual.
May
Halibut season usually opens in May, just as the rain begins to subside and average temperatures rise toward 60°F. Book a full day charter and sail outside of the bay for excellent bottom fishing opportunities!
June
If it swims in Newport, it's biting! You can catch almost anything in June, from Rockfish, Halibut, Salmon, and Crab to Sturgeon. Explore the coastline or head out onto deeper waters for some huge fish.
July
Average temperatures in Newport range from 54° to 61°F in July, and the skies are mostly sunny. Good thing, too, because it's time to head offshore for some Albacore Tuna!
August
The Albacore Tuna season continues in August, so don't miss your chance to experience some of the best light tackle action Newport has to offer. Inshore, you never know what you're about to reel in next!
September
Most species are still at their peak in September, from Salmon and Trout to Halibut. Most of the fish in Newport make for great sport and good eating, so cast away!
October
The Albacore season will be ending soon, so be sure to catch a boat ride offshore if you haven't yet. Crabbing is at its peak, but make sure you check with your guide to see if you're allowed to catch Dungeness offshore.
November
Come November, many anglers return to Yaquina Bay to make the most of the peak seasons for Crab and Rockfish. In the river, Salmon and Steelhead are putting up a mean fight.
December
December is a great time to cast your line in the Yaquina River for Steelhead, or see what kind of luck you can have while crabbing and fishing from shore!
