Fishing in Cape Charles

Cape Charles fishing charters offer some of the best action on Virginia's eastern shore. Whether you're a family looking for an outdoor adventure or a seasoned pro, the calm waters in the Chesapeake Bay or mighty Atlantic provide prime conditions for a range of fish.

If you're fishing here during Striped Bass season, you're in luck. Cape Charles has one of the most thriving fisheries on the East Coast for these monsters – known locally as Rockfish. Other inshore bay targets include Black Drum, Spadefish, and Cobia. The eastern shore also sees massive Tarpon along the Cape's barrier islands come summertime. Head into the Atlantic to hook big offshore fish including Yellowfin Tuna and Marlin.

To land a record-breaking Rockfish, you'll want to opt for a full day in the Lower Chesapeake Bay. The same goes for large pelagic fish in the Atlantic. Opting for a half day trip on the surrounding bays can be just as productive and you're in for your fair share of the action depending on the season.

Cape Charles' favorable position means you can bring home catch from both the bays and the Atlantic in a day's work. If you're looking to focus your fishing in the Chesapeake Bay, you'll head out from one of several boat ramps in Cape Charles Harbor. For fishing trips centered primarily on Atlantic targets, opt for a charter launching out of the eastern end of the Cape.

Rules & Regulations

Most fishing charters in Cape Charles take care of your fishing licenses. In the event that they don't, all anglers 16 and older will need to purchase a fishing license online or from a licensed agent. It's also worth checking up on open season for certain species, especially Rockfish, to avoid disappointment.

Cape Charles Fishing Seasons

  • January

Don't let the cold weather deter you, this is one of the best times to go after record-breaking Rockfish along the coast. Layer up and prepare for seriously rod-bending action!

  • February

It's low season on the Eastern shore, but there's still plenty to do. Check out the Cape Charles Historic District and be transported back in time!

  • March

Head out for productive inshore fishing as the weather warms up. Get your rods bending for Rockfish before the recreational fishing season closes. Hooking Taug and Speckled Trout is on the cards too!

  • April

If the weather's been stopping you from getting out up until now, there's no more room for excuses. Explore the surrounding bays for Flounder, Black Drum, and Tautog.

  • May

Rockfish season in the Chesapeake Bay opens up mid-month and there's plenty of productive inshore fishing for Flounder and Speckled Trout too. Offshore, Yellowfin Tuna starts to come through.

  • June

It's peak season and fishing is great across the board! You'll reel in both bay and ocean fish including Black Drum, Redfish, Cobia, and Tuna and you'll also catch the tail-end of Rockfish season in the Chesapeake Bay.

  • July

Inshore and nearshore fishing continues to stay hot but, if it's offshore fish you're after, this is the best time to head into the rich blue. Yellowfin Tuna and White Marlin are at their peak!

  • August

Whatever you're after, chances are you're catching it. Marlin and Tuna are thriving offshore and it's all about filling the cooler with tasty Redfish, Sheepshead, and Trout inshore.

  • September

Summer may be coming to an end, but you can still hook into delicious Yellowfin Tuna offshore. Inshore there's plenty of Flounder, Red Drum, and Speckled Trout to keep things interesting.

  • October

It's your last chance to get out into the Atlantic for Tuna and Marlin. Inshore you can still hook into Flounder, Red Drum, and Speckled Trout.

  • November

Don't let the cold keep you ashore, as coastal Rockfish fishing is strong. Head to the Bay and you're primed to catch plenty of big fish.

  • December

Some dedicated captains may still be taking anglers out for Rockfish. If you can find someone willing, don't miss out, and get your fill of festive fishing!
