Long Beach's inshore waters consist of rocky bottoms teeming with California Halibut and Rockfish. Pair that with vibrant kelp beds stocked with Calico Bass, White Seabass, and California Sheephead and you've got an action-packed, year-round fishery.
Long Beach's crowning jewel, however, is its proximity to Catalina Island. Travel just 20 miles from the coast and you'll come across Yellowfin Tuna, Mahi Mahi, and Blue Marlin. Head an additional 30 miles out and you'll reach San Clemente Island, a haven for Yellowtail Amberjack. Lastly, if you want to fish the open waters, numerous honey holes lie all the way up to 60 miles from the mainland, offering trophy-sized fish.
If you're planning on fishing near Catalina Island or beyond, your best bet is to set aside enough time for a full day or extended full day trip. This way, you'll account for travel time and give yourself your best shot at a trophy! Inshore fishing happens within 10 miles of shore and a half day trip provides a great introduction to the waters.
There are two main starting points in Long Beach: Long Beach Shoreline Marina and Alamitos Bay Marina. The former departs from downtown Long Beach, whereas the latter is located south of downtown, towards Seal Beach.

Recreational anglers need to purchase a fishing license either online or at authorized California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) counters. California fisheries are heavily regulated, with possession limits, minimum sizes, and seasons changing from year to year. It's best to head out with a knowledgeable captain to ensure you're fishing within the law.
