Fishing in Delacroix

Can't decide between a saltwater or freshwater trip? Do both! A Delacroix fishing adventure will show you the best of both worlds, taking you on an exploration of this unique ecosystem. With waters of the Gulf of Mexico pouring into the luscious marshes, you’ll see how unique fishing this part of Louisiana really is.

The brackish waters are teeming with a variety of species, so you can expect your catch to be made up of species you wouldn’t normally catch in a day. You can explore the marshes and reel in Redfish and Speckled Trout, as well as Largemouth Bass and Garfish. Black Drum, Flounder, Sheepshead, Grouper, and Jack are also possible targets.

Depending on your ambitions, you can book a half day trip and spend a few hours enjoying the area’s natural views. On full day trips, you can choose from a variety of fishing techniques, and spend some more time on the water for a better chance. If you’re up for a challenge, try out fly fishing or bowfishing for a real adrenaline rush!

Charters in the area depart out of Saint Bernard, from one of the ramps along Delacroix Highway. This allows for great fishing at your fingertips, right from the moment your trip starts. With plenty of options to choose from, this is sure to be a fishing experience you won’t forget!

Rules & Regulations

A Louisiana fishing license is necessary in order to go on this fishing adventure. If you’re fishing south of the saltwater line, in brackish waters, you’ll need both a freshwater and a saltwater license.

Delacroix Fishing Seasons

January

As the water cools down, you have a good chance of catching Redfish, while on the warmer days you can target Speckled Trout. You can also fish for Black Drum in one of the lakes in the area.

February

There’s a lot going on in New Orleans this time of year, but for a peaceful day of fishing, the marshes of Delacroix will show you a great time. This is a great month to do some sight fishing in these brackish waters.

March

As the weather starts to warm up, the marshes are waking up, allowing for some great fishing. Expect to reel in Redfish, Black Drum, and Sheepshead.

April

Fishing in April is a pleasant experience with mild temperatures and low rainfall. You can try cruising the shallow waters in search of some trophy Redfish.

May

With the weather warming up and summer getting closer, no one wants to be inside. Head out to the bayous of Delacroix and expect to reel in some big Redfish and some Speckled Trout.

June

In June, the action starts to really heat up! Fishing in the area will produce some great catches, with Redfish, Jack Crevalle, and Garfish topping the list.

July

With summer now in full swing, there’s a chance of storms. However, getting out on the water is a great way to spend the day, as Speckled Trout and Redfish are biting hard.

August

Head out on the water in the morning before sunrise to escape the heat and catch the early bite. The area is still really productive, and Speckled Trout is biting.

September

The heat can be an issue in September, so head out as early as possible and have some serious fun. Trophy Redfish and big Jack Crevalle are lurking in these productive waters.

October

This is the month for Redfish, with the bite being better than ever. The waters are clear this time of year, making October the best time to sight fish for these beautiful creatures.

November

You’ll see Redfish and Flounder still biting, so November is a great time to target some of these prized species.

December

It’s always a good time to fish in Delacroix, and that includes December. You can spend your time looking for Redfish all along the bayous.
