Fishing in Marina Del Rey

Home to the largest small-vessel marina in North America, Marina Del Rey fishing was destined for greatness. Boasting over 5,000 boats, it’s the go-to spot for sportfishing in Los Angeles county. Hop aboard a well-equipped vessel and head into the productive Pacific for a memory-making trip!

There are plenty of places to explore, and even more fish to catch. The marina faces the Santa Monica Bay, where you can hook into Rockfish, California Sheepshead, Calico and Sand Bass, and Bonito. Further out into the blue waters, your targets diversify to include feisty Yellowtail Amberjack and huge Halibut.

If you choose to head to Santa Catalina Island, know that prestigious game fish await. Bluefin, Albacore, and Yellowtail Tuna worthy of any sportfisherman's bucket list make your reels scream. That’s not all either, you can target many different species of Snapper and Grouper here too.

Even if you’ve only got a few hours to spare, you’ll see plenty of action and go home with plenty of fish. A half day trip can easily result in dozens of Rockfish and Bonito in the cooler. If you’re hoping for deep bluewater action, however, opt for a full day or extended full day trip and give yourself enough time to cross those fish off your bucket list.

There’s no better spot to depart on a fishing adventure from than Marina Del Rey. You’ll find charter boats of all shapes and sizes here, suitable for any trip. Located only 4 miles from LAX, it’s a quick drive from the airport to the fishing trip of your dreams!

Rules & Regulations

All anglers over the age of 16 need to pick up a valid California fishing license before hopping aboard a Marina Del Rey fishing charter. A license is available for purchase at most tackle shops and larger retail locations, like Walmart.

Marina Del Rey Fishing Seasons

January

White Seabass and Halibut are good targets during January, as well as Pacific Barracuda and Calico Bass. Make sure to dress for the weather!

February

Most of the action happens around Santa Catalina Island with Calico Bass, Blue Perch, and White Seabass as the primary targets. You can also fish for Mako, Thresher, and Blue Sharks.

March

Rockfish season usually opens in March and the bite is red-hot. Most of the hook-ups happen above underwater reefs and wrecks, just outside of the marina. Lingcod, Halibut, Yellowtail Amberjack, and more species are biting.

April

Nearshore fishing is excellent during April and you can land plenty of Calico Bass, Sharks, Rockfish, California Sheepshead, Halibut, Lingcod, and others. Lobster season closes at the start of April.

May

The nearshore action is as good as ever and the offshore waters are starting to see Bluefin and Yellowfin Tuna closer to land. Seabass, Lingcod, Rockfish, and other top-tier targets are all biting.

June

Yellowfin Tuna and Yellowtail Amberjack are well within reach in June and you can reliably land these predators. Anglers looking at a torpedo-sized trophy can head offshore in search of Bluefin Tuna.

July

Make sure to put sunscreen on, you will want to spend the entire day on the water! Excellent nearshore and offshore fishing for Tuna, Marlin, Mahi Mahi, Amberjack, Barracuda, and others is the norm.

August

Most of the fishing happens in the deep sea. Amberjack, Tuna, Marlin, Mahi Mahi, Seabass, Lingcod, and many other species bite like crazy in August.

September

The bluewater action slows down but you can still find the occasional Bluefin or Yellowfin Tuna. Yellowtail Amberjack, Lingcod, Seabass, Rockfish, and Calico Bass action is still very good.

October

Lobster is back on the menu! The action moves closer to shore as most of the offshore species have migrated away. This is the time to go after California Sheepshead, Rockfish, White Seabass, and Calico Bass.

November

The pelagic season is practically over and most charters will stick to coastal waters. The weather is cold but you can heat yourself up with great Lingcod, Seabass, and Halibut fishing.

December

Get your Rockfishing on before the season for these species closes at the end of the month. Lingcod, Seabass, California Sheepshead, and Lobster are all viable targets in December.
