Fishing in Sunshine Coast

Spanning about 60 km of Queensland’s coastline, the Sunshine Coast is a well-populated area whose stunning coastal scenery is complemented by the amenities and attractions typical of urban areas. And if you’re looking for somewhere to relax with the family while being close to some exceptional fishing, you should look no further. Sunshine Coast fishing is very diverse and has something to offer all types of anglers.

Known For

The multiple pristine rivers and lakes in the Sunshine Coast region are enough to tempt any keen angler away from the sunny beaches. Whether you are fishing Noosa River for Mangrove Jack, Flathead and Whiting, exploring the meanders of the Mooloolah River for Bream and Whiting, or fishing the large but shallow Maroochy River system for Sand Whiting, Flathead, and Mangrove Jack, you will be able to spend days on end catching quality fish. On top of that, the deep and well-stocked Lake MacDonald is a haven for Bass anglers, who can also expect to see catches of Yellowbelly, Eel-tail Catfish, and Mary River Cod. However, it probably won’t surprise you that some of the best fishing spots Sunshine Coast has to offer anglers are found off the coast itself. The area’s ample open beaches stretch from Double Island Point to Caloundra. These make for some fantastic fishing, with catches of Whiting, Flathead and Dart being very common in the summer and Tailor being abundant in the winter. Head offshore, and things start to heat up even further. Take a fishing charter from Noosa or Mooloolaba, and you could be catching sport fish such as Tuna, White, Black and Blue Marlin, and Mackerel. Bottom bouncing for Red Emperor, Snapper, Pearl Perch, and Coral Trout can also make for a great day out for those who want more sustained fishing action. Whatever you go for, Sunshine Coast fishing won’t disappoint.

Rules & Regulations

Anglers do not need a license to fish recreationally in Queensland, unless they are fishing in certain stocked impoundments. Seasonal closures and bag limits apply to a variety of species - check the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries for up to date information or ask your fishing charter operator.

Types of Fishing

River and estuary fishing is excellent for fly fishing for Tarpon, while soft and hard baits can also get some very good results for species such as Mangrove Jack, Flathead, and Bream. Head out to the reefs nearshore for bottom bouncing, giving micro jigging a go for a more involved experience for species such as Snapper, Red Emperor, and Cod. Light tackle fishing with plastics for Spanish Mackerel and Tuna can be excellent nearshore, while heavy tackle fishing for Marlin, Tuna, and Sailfish is waiting for you further offshore.

Sunshine Coast Fishing Seasons

January
The New Year starts in style here on the Sunshine Coast. On the beaches, it's hot hot hot, and the action offshore is no less intense. This is prime time for sportfishing, with Black Marlin putting up a fight on heavy tackle.
February

The burning hot pelagic bite continues on the Sunshine Coast in February. Black Marlin, Cobia, Sailfish, and much more are biting offshore. But if you want to fish for food, you'll find some good action over the reefs, too.

March
March winds are famous everywhere, and here is no different. As the season changes to autumn, the seas get choppier and surfers flock to this part of Queensland. The fishing's great, but bring seasickness medication!
April
As autumn starts to settle in, the bulk of the tourists start to move out of town. This can be a good time to get a deal on accommodation. The weather is nice, and both sportfishing and reef fishing are good.
May

Cooler waters start to arrive offshore in May, which means Cobia, Sailfish, and Marlin are long gone and are replaced by big and boisterous Yellowfin Tuna. Yes, there's no such thing as a slow season around here.

June
It may be winter now, but that's hardly enough to stop the locals getting out on the water. Temperatures can still reach highs of 20º, perfect for spending the day outside. Best of all, offshore reef fishing is now at its peak.
July

If you want to bag a Sunshine Coast Snapper, now is your time to do it. In fact, all the reef species are on top form right now. Speedy Spanish Mackerel is also putting anglers to the test, while Tailor is biting inshore.

August

Winter reef fishing is still about as good as it gets right now, with Snapper, Emperor, Sweetlip, and Tuskfish being just some of the colorful and exotic species you can find. inshore, look for Trevally, Tailor, and Winter Whiting.

September
Spring arrives. Expect some of the best weather of the year: there's low rainfall and temperatures are in the mid-twenties Celsius. Peak reef fishing season is nearing its end and Juvenile Black Marlin start to appear offshore.
October
Reef anglers usually notice a significant drop in the numbers of Snapper being caught. But the pelagic bite gets better and better as warmer currents run past Sunshine Coast. Sailfish and Black Marlin are caught on light tackle.
November
Summer is around the corner, and the action offshore proves it. Expect to see a lot of Cobia being landed, as well as Spanish Mackerel and Sailfish (usually catch and release). The weather is still not too hot yet.

December
As if the recent sportfishing wasn't exciting enough, Mahi Mahi (Dolphin Fish) tends to appear off the Sunshine Coast just in time for Christmas and will stay until March. Thanks, Santa!
