Fishing in Lake Ontario - Canada

The smallest of the Great Lakes when it comes to surface area, Lake Ontario still provides some serious angling action. It’s known as the “Lake of Shining Wonders,” after all – and the fish lurking beneath its waters are pretty wondrous! Located on the USA-Canada border, the northern part of the lake lies entirely in the Great White North. If you’re looking to pick from a bounty of Lake Ontario fishing charters, Canada is the perfect starting point!

Lake Ontario is well-known for its “Salmon fever.” You’ll find Coho, Atlantic, and Pink varieties in these waters, but the real king here is the Chinook! Then there’s Trout, which are more than capable of holding their own. Brown, Lake, and Steelhead species inhabit these waters. Finally, you’ve got Walleye, and a whole host of Bass, including Largemouth and Smallmouth. Phew!

Charter captains located on the Canadian side of Lake Ontario run a wide variety of trips. If you’re new to fishing and feeling daunted by the sheer size of the lake, a half day adventure allows plenty of time to explore the hotspots and get your limit of fish. If you’re visiting in the summer, a longer trip means you’ll have time to get out to deeper, fish-filled waters. It also gives experienced anglers the chance to show off their skills!

Lake Ontario is bordered by some world-famous Canadian cities, so you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to picking a starting point. Toronto, Mississauga, and Hamilton are located on its western side, Kingston is on the east, and there’s a whole host of options in between, too.

Rules & Regulations

All anglers age 18 and over need to be in possession of a valid Ontario fishing license and Outdoors Card to explore Lake Ontario. These usually are not included in the price of a charter trip, so make sure you purchase one online beforehand.

May

Head to the western part of the lake around Hamilton for your best bet at hooking Coho Salmon. Elsewhere in the lake, football-sized Brown Trout can be reeled in.
