Fishing in Sicily

Located on the 'toe' of Italy, Sicily is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea – and a whole host of diverse fish. These waters are full of deep shore cliffs, drops, and sandy seabeds that provide an excellent home for marine life. Put your best foot forward and come discover this unique fishery on a Sicily fishing adventure!

Deep sea fishing is the most popular way to cast a line here. Why? Well, the unique geography of the waters surrounding Sicily means you'll be able to target big game fish such as Swordfish, huge Amberjack, Mahi Mahi, and the mighty Bluefin Tuna less than 25 miles from shore. Although it's possible to chase Tuna and others on a half day trip, you'll usually be advised to opt for a full day adventure.

New to angling? You'll be pleased to know that fishing in Sicily isn't just about big game battles. These waters offer plenty of action for guests with little-to-no previous experience. You can bring along the kids and introduce them to the fun of hooking into Dentex, Dusky Grouper, Bluefish, Barracuda, Little Tunny, and European Seabass. A half day trip allows for a great introduction to these waters, and angling can be combined with snorkeling.

Sicily's east coast is a particularly popular departure point. You'll find charter captains running adventures from Syracuse as well as Taormina, a popular tourist location. The captains posted up here are locals used to tailoring trips for out-of-towners, so you'll be in safe hands. All you need to do is take that first step, and you'll soon be casting off an exciting Sicily fishing adventure!

Rules & Regulations

If you're saltwater fishing in Sicily, you won't need to purchase a fishing license. There are some exceptions to this rule, however, and a local charter captain will make sure you're following local regulations, as well as providing your fishing gear.

Sicily Fishing Seasons

  • January

Thanks to Sicily's year-round fishery, you can start your year off in the right way by embarking on an angling adventure! This time of year is especially productive when it comes to Barracuda, as well as Little Tunny.
  • February

Casting your line in February? The main species to target during this time are Barracuda and Little Tuna, with European Seabass and Dusky Grouper starting to make an appearance.

  • March

Want to test your skills against some Swordfish? This is the time to do it! March sees these species start to spawn. Head out during daylight, where you'll find them drifting through Sicily's surface waters.

  • April

The Swordfish action remains plenty hot during this month – in fact, this is often considered to be peak Swordfish season by local anglers! Huge Amberjack can be found around the wrecks and structure, too.

  • May

May means one thing – Tuna season is starting! Chasing Bluefin is something of a tradition here, and you'll be able to start casting your line for these fish during this month. Swordfish are putting up a serious fight, too.

  • June

Head out onto the Mediterranean to test your skills against mighty Bluefin Tuna, as well as Albacore. Swordfish and Amberjack are plentiful, and you'll be able to bottom fish for Grouper species, too.

  • July

As temperatures rise higher than ever, the only thing hotter than the weather during July is Sicily's fishing opportunities! It's all about huge Bluefin, speedy Swordfish, and tasty Mahi Mahi if you're deep sea fishing.

  • August

Sicily is seriously busy, as the tourist season hits its peak. Head out to the water for the chance to escape the crowds and battle Bluefin for a trophy. Want to hook Swordfish? Head out under the cover of darkness.

  • September

This is one of the peak months when it comes to targeting Bluefin, and you'll find charter captains offering Tuna-only angling adventures. It's the perfect time for serious anglers to visit and hook that trophy catch!

  • October

Bluefin fishing remains strong, the weather is as pleasant as can be, and the crowds have dropped off, making this a great time for Tuna chasing. Anglers who want tasty table fare can target Dentex and Grouper.

  • November

Come target the Amberjack bite while it's still hot – it starts to drop off at the end of November! Bluefin Tuna are looking for a fight, so why not test your skills against them? Barracuda and Grouper can be hooked, too.

  • December

Give yourself the Christmas present of a lifetime by heading to Sicily! The Bluefin Tuna bite has cooled off, but feisty Barracuda can be targeted around Sicily's underwater drops and structure, as well as Little Tunny.
