Fishing in Hauraki Gulf

Spanning 4,000 square kilometres out to the Pacific Ocean, the Hauraki Gulf has plenty to offer. From the nearshore islands to the reefs protecting the bays, all the way to the deep seas offshore, there’s an angling adventure for everyone. Choose from one of the many Hauraki Gulf Fishing charters ready to take you for a fun-filled day on the water.

Known in Maori as “the mournful sea,” the fishing opportunities here will leave you everything but downbeat. Get ready for a thrilling day out wherever you head, as you go up against some delicious creatures such as Snappers, Kingfish, John Dory, and Salmon nearshore. Meanwhile, an offshore trip will see you put your strength to the test against Blue, Black, and Striped Marlin, along with Tuna, Swordfish, Groper, and many more prized fish.

If you’re a beginner, then a four- or six-hour trip will give you the chance to test the shallow waters around the islands. A full day trip gives you the chance to head to the Great Barrier Island beyond the Gulf. Experienced anglers, however, will have the chance of spending days on end on the water, hitting up the deep waters of the Pacific for some of the biggest fish out there.

Fishing is an integral part of life all around the coast of the Gulf, so you’ll be able to hop aboard a charter in Auckland, Ti Point, Whangaparaoa, or the Coromandel peninsula. Bring the whole family aboard, and make the most of some unparalleled marine and wildlife on your Hauraki Gulf fishing adventure!

Rules & Regulations

Another beauty of fishing in the Hauraki Gulf is that it’s completely free of charge. There’s no need to get a license before coming aboard. However, you should abide by the rather strict bag limits that are in place, but your professional captain will keep you on top of it all.

Hauraki Gulf Fishing Seasons

January

Welcome in the new year with some of the best fishing on offer in New Zealand. Head to the rich waters of the Pacific and battle it out with monster Blue and Striped Marlin as you go after the catch of a lifetime.

February

While the summer weather may trick you into thinking that an offshore trip is a good idea, beware that it could change at any time. Keep an eye on the clouds before heading offshore to make the most of the Marlin bite.

March

Auckland’s arts festival and Pasifika festival bring the city to life in March, so while the weather may be threatening to turn, there’s no sign of anything dying down. Combine your visit with a trip to sea for great results.

April

While summer may be a distant memory, there’s still plenty of red-hot fishing action on offer in the Hauraki Gulf and beyond in autumn. Target Kingfish and Snappers nearshore, or go after Tuna and Swordfish offshore.

May

The weather is still pretty changeable in May but, if you catch it right, you’re in for a real fishing treat. There are still plenty of Marlin offshore, while the tasty nearshore fish offer plenty of action too.

June

Take advantage of lower hotel prices, and make the most of some incredible fishing, no matter the conditions. There are plenty of Swordfish, Gropers, Kingfish, and Snappers to keep you on your toes.

July

While the waters may be at their coldest, there are still some warm-blooded fish that are happy to call them home. Get out on the water and keep warm, as you battle it out with Gropers, Swordfish, and more.

August

Get ready to be blown away, literally, when fishing the Hauraki Gulf in August. It’s windy season in the north of New Zealand, so you’ll have to keep an eye on the forecast before heading aboard your trip.

September

With spring ready to breathe new life into the Hauraki Gulf, there’s a flurry of activity on the water. Go after Tarakihi, Groper, Snappers, and Kingfish, and land some of the country’s most-loved fish.

October

As the fish begin to spawn, there’s a feeding frenzy in the bay come October. Get your fish on nearshore against beauties such as Kingfish, Snappers, and Tarakihi, and head home with a tasty treat.

November

Whether you’re looking for a full day on the water, or just a few hours of fun, there’s something for you. Expect incredible action just minutes from leaving the dock, as Snappers make their way close to shore.

December

Summer is here, and the nearshore fishing has never been better. See out the year in style by landing plenty of fish for the holidays, before the offshore season starts in earnest in the new year.
