Fishing in Corpus Christi Bay

The Corpus Christi Bay fishing scene is as diverse as can be! Boasting marshes, flats, jetties, channels, and access to the rich waters of the Gulf of Mexico, this lagoon has it all. Whether you’re fly fishing, bottom fishing, or heading out for some big game action, there’s no better place to start your angling adventure.

You’ll find something to whet your appetite year-round in these rich waters. Go after delicious inshore creatures like Flounder, Redfish, Sheepshead, and Texas’ favorite fish – Speckled Trout. You can also test your skills and strength against Cobia, Amberjack, Tarpon, and even Mackerel. Meanwhile, big game enthusiasts can get their pulses racing with a trip to target Mahi Mahi, Tuna, and Marlin, alongside the elusive Red Snapper – the list is endless!

Whether you’ve just got a few hours to spare, or fancy a real fishing holiday, a Corpus Christi fishing charter has something for you. Choose from half day trips to introduce the family to fishing, while the more keen angler will relish the chance to spend a full day casting. Inshore trips can last as long as ten hours, while offshore trips can see you spend up to 24 hours on the water.

Wherever you are around the bay, you’re not far from a thrilling adventure. You can hop aboard in Corpus Christi or its surrounding areas, Portland and Ingleside. Mustang or South Padre Island are popular departure points, too. Hit the Corpus Christi or any of its adjacent bays, along with the Gulf of Mexico, and get your fish on like never before!

Rules & Regulations

Before coming aboard, all anglers age 17 or older will need to purchase a TX saltwater fishing license. Get yours online or from any licensed retailer and away you go!

While Texas is pretty liberal with its bag limits, you’ll want to be aware of the Red Drum tag. Grab one alongside your fishing license to take home one “bull” Redfish (bigger than 28 inches), and you’re good to go. For all other regulations, your professional captain will keep you informed.

Corpus Christi Bay Fishing Seasons

January
There’s no better way to start the new year than fishing for Trout. You’ll find huge numbers of Specs at the upper side of the bay, close to Ingleside Cove, to put your skills to the test.

February
As the fishing action in the Gulf is still pretty low, it’s best to target Black Drum, Trout, or Sheepshead in the bay. Get your fish on and head home with a delicious treat!

March
Go fishing around the Long Reef for Trout. The reef is close to deeper waters, which makes it a great spot year round, attracting plenty of delicious creatures for you to target.
April
Keep an eye on the forecast, as the weather can change very quickly in April. If you manage to dodge the showers, then follow the locals to Oso Bay Bridge and get your fill of exciting fishing.

May
Spring has truly sprung and the warmer weather brings with it plenty of tough-fighting and delicious Redfish. Go after these beauties inshore, along with Cobia or Jacks nearshore, for a thrilling adventure.

June
Red Snapper season kicks off in June and anglers race to the Gulf in search of this prized fish. Get ready for plenty of action as you look to land this dinner-table favorite.
July
So many great fishing spots, so little time! You can go to the Gulf for Kingfish, Spanish Mackerel, or Jack Crevalle, or stay in the bay and target "the big three." Wherever you go, the fishing is red hot.

August
With the kids off school, now's the prime time to introduce them to some exciting fishing in the bay. More avid anglers will relish the chance to head offshore, though, to land Mahi Mahi and Tuna.
September
The end of summer is a great time to target Redfish. Try your luck at the Indian Reef, between Corpus Christi and Portland, and get your fish on right away as you take advantage of the summer run of these beauties.
October
If you want to make the most of the Redfish spawning season, the beaches and jetties in Corpus Christi Bay are where you need to be. Flounder fishing also hits its peak, so you're sure to land a treat.

November
Whatever you're looking for, these waters still have it. Hit the bay to land your limit of delicious Flounder, while an offshore trip will see you battle it out with monster Tuna.

December
End the year with a true Texan adventure. Come Flounder gigging in the shallows around the Mustang Island Flats and get your fill of these delicious creatures, as well as targeting Trout by wade fishing!
