Fishing in Currituck Sound

Currituck Sound offers a unique brackish fishing environment where freshwater rivers meet the Atlantic, creating exceptional diversity for anglers. This destination lets you target both freshwater favorites like Largemouth Bass, Catfish, and Perch alongside saltwater species including Striped Bass, Spotted Seatrout, Flounder, and Red Drum—all within the same waters. Seasonal shifts bring dynamic opportunities: summer attracts Tarpon, Cobia, and Mackerel, while spring and fall yield trophy Striped Bass and Drum.

Professional charters operate from Duck, Kitty Hawk, and Corolla, providing tailored trips from quick 2-hour oyster foraging to full-day excursions or specialized night bowfishing for Flounder and Trout. Licensed captains handle all regulations and licenses, ensuring stress-free adventures for families and anglers of all levels. Beyond rod-and-reel, the sound’s shallows offer clamming, crabbing, and oyster harvesting—perfect for immersive coastal experiences.

With its resurgence as a premier Largemouth Bass fishery and year-round action, Currituck Sound delivers unforgettable moments whether you’re seeking trophy catches or teaching beginners. Explore hidden creeks, barrier islands, and fertile flats where every cast promises variety and excitement in North Carolina’s vibrant aquatic crossroads.

Currituck Sound Fishing Seasons

January
There aren’t many boats willing to take you offshore in the winter, but you may be lucky enough to find a trip to fill up on Oysters. Head to Duck and harvest some of the world’s most-famous Oysters and Clams.
February
If you’re lucky enough to find a charter to take you to sea, then there’s plenty of action to keep you warm, despite the cold weather. Striped Bass fishing can be particularly fruitful, so come and test your skills.
March
More and more captains start making their way to the sound come spring, with their vessels restored and ready to hit the water. Come and join them for exciting Trout and Drum fishing to fill the boat.
April
Spring has truly sprung in the Outer Banks come April, and the season of new life is reflected in the renewed fishing. Target Red Drum, Black Drum, Trout, and Bluefish inshore and get ready for peak season.
May
You won’t know where to go with the arrival of Mahi Mahi, Cobia, Wahoo, and Blackfin Tuna offshore. Don’t miss out on the Drum run, though, as the sound is overflowing with these beauties.
June
The short run to the Gulf Stream may tempt you to land that trophy catch, as Blue Marlin and Sailfish arrive. Meanwhile, Tarpon makes its way to the sound, giving you some thrilling inshore fishing too.
July
Holiday-makers from all over the country flock to these coastal spots, and you should come and see why. The fishing has never been better, so book early to avoid missing out on the summer fun in the OBX.
August
With the kids off school, now’s the time to get them hooked on fishing. Come on a family vacation to any of the Currituck Sound’s stunning resort towns and head inshore, nearshore, or offshore.
September
There’s no sign of anything changing in the water, with the fishing still red-hot. Head to the Gulf Stream and battle it out with Marlin and Sailfish, hit the reefs for Mackerel, or fish inshore for the usual favorites.
October
Attention shifts back to the Currituck Sound itself as the offshore season comes to a close. Bluefish, Redfish, Black Drum, Spotted Seatrout, and Tarpon are just some of the beauties you’ll come across.
November
As the weather starts to make a fishing trip less predictable, many captains will look to keep their boats in the harbor. The calm waters of the North River, however, are a great place to land Bass and Perch.
December
Celebrate the holidays with Duck’s annual Yuletide Festival, as you’ll be hard-pressed to find a charter to take you to sea. If you are successful, then there’s still plenty of inshore action for you to land a tasty treat.
