Fishing in Feather River

The Feather River of northern California is the main tributary of the Sacramento River and a vital source of life for many fish species. That’s why fishing the Feather River is a great choice for anglers looking to drop a few lines and have a successful day on the water.

Depending on the season, you’ll be able to target Chinook, Coho, and Sockeye Salmon, as well as Steelhead, Rainbow Trout, and Striped Bass. Other species that inhabit the river include Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass, American Shad, Catfish, Sunfish, and Crappie.

Guides throughout the river provide a wide range of options for anglers to choose form. Half day trips are ideal for beginners or families with kids, while full day trips are great for experts looking to stay on the water a few extra hours. From private trips to shared boats or half day trips to full day excursions – you’ll be able to find the package that’s right for you.

There are lots of towns with fishing guides where you can enjoy a productive day on the river and catch some excellent game fish. Some of these towns include Gridley, Live Oak, Marysville, and Yuba City. The Yuba-Sutter area has the largest concentration of guides to choose from with lots of great options for families, kids, and all skill levels.

Whether you’re looking to catch a delicious meal or a big trophy fish, the Feather River’s got a little something for everyone!

Rules & Regulations

Anglers over the age of 16 must obtain a valid CA fishing license. Keep in mind that certain species may require additional permits or report cards. Feather River Fishing Seasons

January

January offers solid Steelhead and Rainbow Trout runs. This is a great time for fly fishermen to hit the river and enjoy nymphing while the weather is cold outside.

February

Rainbow Trout and Steelhead are still taking the bait. You might also be able to find some Sturgeon on the lower part of the river, towards the Upper Sacramento River.

March

Largemouth, Smallmouth, and Spotted Bass, as well as Brown Trout, start coming out of their winter hibernation. This is an excellent time to target Smallies around Verona.

April

Striper season is finally here! Now is a great time to try and target that monster Striper you’ve been wanting to catch.

May

As the fish start to settle into their spring patterns, you can expect to target a wider variety of species. Striped Bass, Catfish, Rainbow Trout, and Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass are just some of the species you can catch this month.

June

The fishing really starts to get hot on the Feather River in June. You can expect to target Smallies, Stripers, Largemouth Bass, Catfish, Rainbow Trout, and Shad.

July

Salmon season is here! Pick a guide that will take you fishing for Chinook and catch yourself a delicious meal you can share later with the family.

August

Now is the best time to target Chinook Salmon on the Feather River. You can also expect to catch lots of Rainbow Trout, and Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass.

September

September is a great month if you’re looking to catch a monster King Salmon. Pick a full day trip and see if you can catch a King in the 30+ lb range!

October

You can continue to fish for big Chinook throughout the rest of October. You can also target Rainbow Trout and Steelhead.

November

November will also provide great Salmon action, as well as Rainbow Trout, Catfish, and Smallmouth Bass.

December

Take one of the last opportunities to go on a Salmon run before the season closes. After a productive day of fishing, head down to Sacramento and check out some of the winter festivals going on this month!
