Fishing in Lake Marion

South Carolina’s “Inland Sea” is probably the state’s top freshwater fishing destination. Year-round, you can come fishing on Lake Marion and target some of the country’s most-loved creatures. Fish from shore or hop aboard a charter and head out to the middle of the largest lake in SC, and get your hands full of exciting fish.

Home to the state record Largemouth Bass, it’s no surprise what’s top of the list for anglers in Lake Marion. Whenever you visit, you can get your fill of these tough-fighting beauties. Most captains design their trips to target specific fish, so you’re sure to focus your attention to land that prized catch.

Another trophy to target is the monster Striped Bass. Along with huge, delicious Catfish, they make up the cream of the crop, while Crappie and Perch are the best of the rest. Target them all throughout the year, and you’re sure to fill the boat.

Choose between four-hour and eight-hour trips, depending on how long you can take battling it out with monster fish. The more adventurous among you can even take a trip at night. Come aboard in Summerton or Santee in the midsection of the lake, or Cross in the south, and get your fish on in style.

Rules & Regulations

Before hopping aboard a Lake Marion fishing charter, you’ll need to get your SC freshwater fishing license. With options ranging from 14 days to a lifetime’s worth of fishing, there’s definitely something to cover you.

Other than that, your professional guide will keep you up-to-date with the seasonal limits. Just beware that it’s forbidden to fish for Striped Bass in the summer months, so get ready to release ‘em if you hook one aboard.

Lake Marion Fishing Seasons

January
The mild winters of South Carolina make it the ideal getaway from the winter blues. Come aboard and head to the heart of the lake, as you go after Largemouth and Striped Bass for a real treat.
February
It may still not be peak season for fishing, but there’s plenty of exciting Bass to hunt in Lake Marion. You’ll need to hit the deep waters to reach them, so why not hop on a charter to make the most of it?
March
It’s starting to get more lively on the water with the Largemouth and Striped Bass threatening to spawn soon. Target these beauties along with plenty of Crappie, and you’re sure to get what you want.
April
You’ll feel things heat up when it comes to the fishing in April, with spawning season kicking off for Lake Marion’s most-prized sons (and daughters)! Get your fish home and head home with a trophy catch.
May
Tough-fighting and delicious Bass are abundant in May, as the spawning frenzy reaches its peak. Expect plenty of hits, as you look to test your skills and strength time after time again to fill the boat.
June
Catfish add an extra spice to the red hot fishing in Lake Marion come summer, so why not hop aboard a tailor-made trip to target these beauties? Try out a range of techniques and you may learn something new!
July
The long, hot summer days make for uncomfortable conditions during the day. Head out first thing in the morning or at night and you’ll just happen to stumble across the best feeding times of Bass, too.
August
Make the most of summer vacation and bring the kids along to target Crappie and smaller Panfish, while you can get your fish on against tough-fighting Bass and monster Catfish like never before.
September
Get ready for the opening up of the Striper season once again! Hit the shallow spots of the lake in search of these beauties. They’ll be schooling along with Largemouth Bass first thing in the morning.
October
While the weather may be cooling, there’s no sign that the fishing is slowing down. Get out on the lake and take advantage of your last chance to land Catfish, along with targeting the usual favorites.
November
You’ll need to turn your attention to the deep waters as fall turns into winter, with the Bass population heading deep to hibernate. That just means that the help of an experienced captain is what you need!
December
While other fishing haunts across the country are shutting up for the holidays, Lake Marion is open for business. Come aboard and land some delicious fish as a Christmas treat for the whole family.
