Fishing in Lake Travis

Come fishing in Lake Travis year-round and get your hands on Bass of all kinds, as you indulge in a day of exciting angling. After a devastating drought between 2011 and 2014, the Lake is quickly re-establishing itself as a prime fishing destination. This man-made reservoir along the Columbia River offers a haven for anglers just out of Austin, providing some of northern Texas’ most productive waters.

What kind of fish can I catch in Lake Travis?

Bass

Bass is the name of the game when it comes to fishing on Lake Travis. These rich waters are home to over five kinds of tough-fighting and delicious Bass, which means you’re always in for a fun-filled and fruitful day out.

Target the nation’s favorite freshwater fish, Largemouth Bass, in spring and fall. These creatures may be smaller in Lake Travis than what you’re used to, but they still promise to put up an intense fight to get off the end of your line. Most guides prefer to practice catch and release on these beauties to keep up stocks, but you may be able to take one home as a prize.

Hybrid, White, Striped, and Spotted Bass all make for an exciting addition to the Largemouth. From jigging for White Bass in the creeks in spring to trolling for huge Stripers in summer, there’s no end to the fun you can have targeting the best of the rest of these sought-after species.

Sunfish

If you’re looking to try your hand at fishing for the first time, then Sunfish can be a great way to start off. These small, delicious creatures will give you the chance to practice your skills, all the while landing plenty of meat. Come in summer for the best results, and bring the whole family for a few days, taking in the range of outdoor activities on offer.

Catfish

Don’t worry if you can only come to Lake Travis in winter, though. Catfish come out to play from December onwards. Blue, Flathead, and Channel Catfish are at their biggest when the weather gets colder, so hop aboard a fishing charter and get ready for an exciting trip to warm you up, before heading home with a hearty meal.

How to Prepare

Your Lake Travis fishing guide will most likely be a passionate, experienced angler with their own boat and all the latest fishing gear. Aboard a purpose-built bass boat, you’ll have everything you need for a productive day, with most captains even welcoming beginners and children to get hooked on fishing. All you’ll need to do is bring some drinks and snacks aboard, and grab your TX freshwater fishing license before coming aboard and settling in for a thrilling day.

Whatever time of year it is, fishing on Lake Travis is open to you. Bring the whole family along and discover this beautiful body of water in thrilling style!
