Come fishing in Lake Travis year-round and get your hands on Bass of all kinds, as you indulge in a day of exciting angling. After a devastating drought between 2011 and 2014, the Lake is quickly re-establishing itself as a prime fishing destination. This man-made reservoir along the Columbia River offers a haven for anglers just out of Austin, providing some of northern Texas’ most productive waters.

What kind of fish can I catch in Lake Travis?

Bass

Bass is the name of the game when it comes to fishing on Lake Travis. These rich waters are home to over five kinds of tough-fighting and delicious Bass, which means you’re always in for a fun-filled and fruitful day out.

Target the nation’s favorite freshwater fish, Largemouth Bass, in spring and fall. These creatures may be smaller in Lake Travis than what you’re used to, but they still promise to put up an intense fight to get off the end of your line. Most guides prefer to practice catch and release on these beauties to keep up stocks, but you may be able to take one home as a prize.

Hybrid, White, Striped, and Spotted Bass all make for an exciting addition to the Largemouth. From jigging for White Bass in the creeks in spring to trolling for huge Stripers in summer, there’s no end to the fun you can have targeting the best of the rest of these sought-after species.

Sunfish

If you’re looking to try your hand at fishing for the first time, then Sunfish can be a great way to start off. These small, delicious creatures will give you the chance to practice your skills, all the while landing plenty of meat. Come in summer for the best results, and bring the whole family for a few days, taking in the range of outdoor activities on offer.

Catfish

Don’t worry if you can only come to Lake Travis in winter, though. Catfish come out to play from December onwards. Blue, Flathead, and Channel Catfish are at their biggest when the weather gets colder, so hop aboard a fishing charter and get ready for an exciting trip to warm you up, before heading home with a hearty meal.

How to Prepare

Your Lake Travis fishing guide will most likely be a passionate, experienced angler with their own boat and all the latest fishing gear. Aboard a purpose-built bass boat, you’ll have everything you need for a productive day, with most captains even welcoming beginners and children to get hooked on fishing. All you’ll need to do is bring some drinks and snacks aboard, and grab your TX freshwater fishing license before coming aboard and settling in for a thrilling day.

Whatever time of year it is, fishing on Lake Travis is open to you. Bring the whole family along and discover this beautiful body of water in thrilling style!

April
It’s all systems go in April, as the fishing hits its stride and the townsfolk do their most to attract tourists. Get out on the water or simply come and enjoy Springfest, and make the most of the Lake’s range of entertainment.
May
There’s still plenty of Largemouth, White, and Striped Bass come May, with the arrival of Sunfish providing the chance for beginners to land their first catch. Come and feel the heat as it starts warming up!
June

August
There’s never been a better time to come fishing than in August. Under the warm summer sunshine, plenty of Bass, Sunfish, and Catfish will be biting to ensure a fun-filled trip on the lake.
September
There’s no sign of it slowing down in September, although the lake will get quieter. Come and make the most of the peaceful waters and catch the last of the Sunfish rush before the Bass come back in numbers.
October
Largemouth Bass swarm to Lake Travis in fall, giving you the chance for some serious game fishing against these tough-fighting creatures. Come aboard and prove to everyone that the season’s not done.
November
With the change in weather, there’s a marked decline in activity on the lake. Don’t let that fool you though, with Largemouth Bass still offering plenty in the way of exciting action. Come and fill up before the holidays!
December
The end of the year may be the time to look back on a successful past 12 months, but that shouldn’t stop you from seizing the moment. Take advantage of the returning Catfish and end the year in style.

Captain Randall was extremely helpful from scheduling to end of trip. We had a wonderful time highly recommend him. He is very knowledgeable and helpful teaching how to fish. The trip was scheduled as a gift for our nephew who loves to fish. We are not experienced. Captain Randall had enormous patience and would cast my line for me too. My nephew is experienced and said that he had a great time and would use him if he is back in area.

We had a wonderful time with Captain Randal this morning. He is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about what he does. Just before our trip, he mentioned he scuba dived in the lake to find some new fishing spots! Thatโ€™s just one example of his desire to put his clients on fish. We had a great time and would highly recommend him.

Had a great day with Matthew! He was a great guide and me and my fiancรฉ will DEFINITELY be booking another trip with him and learned so much. We had a pretty slow morning but Matthew taught us so many different techniques and was extremely informative. It really started picking up towards the end and we started pulling out fish after fish. Matthew definitely knows what heโ€™s talking about and knows how to get those fish in the boat!

Kevin was perfect. Made sure the dropoff/pickup locations were clearly understand and showed up early, waited for us and was prepared. Being a clueless and casual angler, he satisfied my curiosities regarding what our techniques were and had some good conversations about the surrounding areas. He's also a magician. First cast, first fish, only fish. I'll never believe that he didn't plant it in the water and "reel" it in so we got some action. Nice guy. Highly rated.

Great half-day with Captain Ray. Very patient and great coach for a novice and a mild-moderately experienced angler. Taught me things I have been doing wrong all my life and I learned a lot. Clearly knows his way around the area and how to catch bass! Conditions were poor but we pulled in some nice ones anyway making for great pics and a fabulous experience. I would definitely go with him again! Highly recommend.

What a great morning of fishing with Randal. His communication from the start of the booking through the day of fishing was top notch. We loved the opportunity to try our hand at different lures. Randal was very knowledgable and made sure we knew how to use each of them. The bass were plentiful and the time we spent on Lake Travis was memorable. Thank you for such a great day!

Took my girl out on a fishing trip with Derek. We didnโ€™t know much about fishing. We arrived at the dock and Derek took us out to the hot spots. Slow at first but Derek quick changed up the lures and relocated us. We couldnโ€™t keep up with the fish. We even extended for another hour and caught 2 large cats. DeeZ the Man!!!

My Grandson and I had a great time fishing with Captain Ray. We had basically used close face reels, but Captain Ray was very patients and instructed us on how to use the open face reel and how to cast. It didn't take but a few minutes and my Grandson had his first fish. I would recommend Captain Ray as a guide if you're looking for a great experience!
