Fishing in Rogue River

If you’re looking for a freshwater adventure in southern Oregon, go fishing with the Rogue River charters! Known for its untamed beauty and breathtaking scenery, this river has over 200 miles of fishable water. Rogue River fishing guides have a reputation for knowing some of the best Steelhead and Salmon hideouts. Novices and experienced anglers alike are welcome to join them!

Spring-run Chinook Salmon, also known as “Springers,” are the most desirable catch here. The reason so many anglers won’t rest until they’ve caught one is the amazing fight they put up. If you want to catch this most aggressive type of Salmon, take a trip in May. Fall Salmon fishing is slightly different, since the fish are bigger and fight less.

During winter, the fishing scene belongs to Steelhead Trout. They are very active from December–March and are a great target if you want to practice fly fishing. Rainbow Trout put on  a great show in October with their jumps, splashes, and fighting spirit (considering their size).

Local fishing guides usually run trips year round, but the peak charter season is during the spring and fall Salmon runs, when more guides show up. There are two main types of trips: half day and full day options. While half day trips are great if you want to target one specific type of fish, full days usually give you the chance of a combo trip and you’ll get to try out more fishing techniques. You can find the best fishing spots in lower parts of the river, especially from Grants Pass to Gold Beach.

Rules & Regulations

Every angler age 12 or older needs an Oregon fishing license. Catch limits vary each year, so it’s best to check with your guide.

Rogue River Fishing Seasons

January
The winter Steelhead run makes fishing interesting even in January. They are bigger this time of year than in summer.

February
Steelhead fishing is still great in February. The best way to catch them is by drift fishing in the lower part of the river.

March
This is peak season for winter Steelhead. Use the opportunity to catch them now or wait until fall.

April
Springers are showing up! Chinook Salmon’s spring run attracts lots of anglers, so make sure to book your spot in time!

May
May is peak season for Springers! Catch one of these aggressive fighters on light tackle.

June
The Chinook Salmon peak has passed but they’re still present in big numbers. Go after them in the Grants Pass area.

July
You can go after Steelhead and Chinook but July is a slightly slower month because the temperatures are higher.

August
Target Chinook, Coho Salmon, and Steelhead on a combo trip! Try out different techniques and see what works best for you.

September
The Salmon fall run starts in September and more anglers join the game. Whether you troll or fly fish, you’ll have a great time!

October
Go after Coho and Chinook Salmon! They’re at their biggest during the fall run and it takes more strength to reel them in.

November
It’s never a bad idea to go after Chinook Salmon, but you can also get a load of angling action by going after Steelhead.

December
Steelhead feed actively in December, so you’re likely to get a bite from them. Go after these “silver bullets” in the lower part of the river.

just do what the captain instructs you to do ie; if he tells you it's best to keep the rod in the pole holder then do it and don't hold the rod. thats why you loose fish. tip the captain well if you like him and he performs.

Tyler was an amazing guide for my husband and I. We not only did we catch our limit, we were so warm and comfortable! He has a heater on board and the boat actually has doors! so 5โ€™ me didnโ€™t have to try to climb into the boat! And if that wasnโ€™t enough he has a pizza oven on the boat and served us a nice warm meal! I 10/10 recommend Generational Guide Services with Tyler! We will 100% be going again!

I've been out with Gordo twice now, once for Fall Salmon/Steelhead and once for Winter Steelhead and both trips were a great success. On the first trip I caught both my biggest Salmon and Steelhead ever on the same day. A 36 lb Salmon and an 18 lb Steelhead, HOGS!!! The 2nd trip was great with a few fish in the boat on a quiet Winter day around the holidays. Gordo's boat is super comfortable and the service he provides as Captain is second to none. I'll be a return customer for sure!

Iโ€™m from Northern California, which I think is beautiful, but after going out on The Rogue River with Tyler I was so impressed. His knowledge of the river must have been passed down to him from years and years of ancestors. He knew all of the picturesque places to take pics, the flow of the river and most importantly, where to catch the big fish! I highly recommend Tyler and Gordonโ€™s Generational Guide Service!

What an amazing experience! Tyler is a top notch guide with the knowledge and experience to get you on the fish. The boat was amazing with comfortable captains chairs and a nice heater and food worming box. This was my first drift boat experience and it exceeded my expectations at every turn. I am booking a couple of trips to enjoy with family and out of state friends.

This was the most fun and successful catching trip we have ever experienced. Captain Steve was excellent in all ways. He showed us how & where to fish while explaining the ins and outs of the tides and the impact on fishing. He was very helpful and personal before, throughout, and after the trip. Most important is we caught our limit of fish! We certainly will book trips with him again!
