Fishing in Sandestin

If you’re in Florida and you’re looking for top-notch fishing, Sandestin is the place to be. Swap the Destin crowds for its little brother, and hop on one of the numerous Sandestin fishing charters for an adventure you won’t forget. This beautiful resort town is known for its stunning beaches and amazing weather, but fishing here is an experience you’re sure to love.

With the Gulf waters kissing the shores of Sandestin’s beaches, as well as the Choctawhatchee Bay on the other side, there’s no end to the list of species you can target. Inshore, you’ll find all the Florida favorites like Snook, Tarpon, Redfish, Trout, and Sheepshead. The nearshore reefs hold great numbers of Snapper and Grouper, and if you venture out a bit further, you’re looking at battling Tuna, Mahi Mahi, Marlin, Sailfish, and many more prized game fish.

Looking for a nice family holiday adventure? Think about booking a half day trip on a Sandestin fishing charter. These trips are normally 4 hours long, and they give you a great overview of the fishing scene. For those of you who are looking for a bigger adrenaline rush, booking a full day trip or longer is the best decision.

You’ll find charters dotted around the town, so just head on down to the water and take your pick. You can head towards Destin, or move in the other direction and find charters at Santa Rosa Beach and the Choctawhatchee Bay Causeway. Wherever you go, you’re in for a treat!

Rules & Regulations

If you’re booking a trip on a fishing charter, you don’t have to worry about anything, as the captain will provide you with a fishing license. Going out with a reputable captain is the best way to make sure you’re fishing within the law.

Sandestin Fishing Seasons

January

While the weather can get a bit chilly, the fishing gets hot! Head offshore and go after Snapper, or stay inshore and explore the bays for your fill of nice Redfish and Trout to take home for dinner.

February

It’s still not warm enough for those pelagics to make their appearance, but there’s a variety of other options in the bays and on the reefs. You can do some prolific fishing and catch Trout, Redfish, Snapper, and Amberjack.

March

As the weather begins to warm up, the angling gets a lot more interesting. The fishing season is just about to start, with great numbers of Cobia coming up to the reefs. Casting in the bay remains strong.

April

This is when the real fun begins! In April you’ll see Cobia fishing reaching its peak, and anglers from all over the world start coming to the area for their chance to land that monster trophy fish.

May

Marking the beginning of the offshore season, this is a great time to visit if you’re looking for great action further from shore. You can try trolling for some of the pelagic species that swim through the area, or bottom fish for Grouper.

June

This is the best time to visit to have a full Florida getaway. Marking the start of the holiday season, fishing in June is especially productive, with a variety of pelagics to be caught offshore, and with the inshore bite as hot as ever.

July

With the temperatures rising and the summer in full swing, you’ll want to head out offshore and try to reel in a big Red Snapper. Inshore, you’ll find the Tarpon bite to be hot during the high season.

August

As the high season continues, heading to the deep waters will provide you with great chances of breaking some records. You’ll find all the prized pelagics, with the reefs and shallow waters equally productive.

September

This is when the crowds start to die down, but the fishing isn’t going anywhere. It’s still warm, and it’s a great time to be out on the water, with species like Tuna and Sailfish coming pretty close to shore.

October

While the temperatures slowly start to go down, you’ll find the visiting in October is just as fun as in the summer. And with the Destin Fishing Rodeo happening next door, you can test your skills and try to get a nice prize.

November

Marking the end of the pelagic season, November is your chance to get that last bite. Fishing in the bay, as well as bottom fishing the reefs is still hot, so come out and fill your freezer in preparation for the holidays!

December

This is when the temperature drops a bit, but you’ll still have a nice time on the Florida coast. Spend your day visiting the reefs and trying out some bottom fishing – you’re sure to catch a nice dinner!
