Fishing in Trinity Bay

The Trinity Bay fishing scene features some of the best inshore fishing you can find in Texas. Located in the northern part of Galveston Bay, this is a rich natural habitat, with bayous, flats, and marshes all around. Consistently great weather makes Trinity Bay a true year-round fishery, but the most popular time to sink a line here is during the fall months.

This is one of the best places on the Texas Gulf Coast to catch an “Inshore Grand Slam” – Redfish, Speckled Trout, and Flounder. You’ll get to explore some of the most beautiful views as you enjoy your day in this natural gem. Sheepshead, Black Drum, and Mangrove Snapper are also in the cards, as well as the occasional Shark and Mackerel.

These waters are fairly easy to navigate, as they’re shallow and calm. You can head out on a half day trip and spend some quality time with your family, or teach the little ones all about the joys of fishing. If you’re looking to maximize your chances of filling the bags with some delicious table fare, a full day trip is probably the best option.

And what part of this stunning body of water do you visit? Wherever you go around Trinity Bay, you’re bound to come across a variety of fishing charters. Visit Baytown or Clear Lake and take your pick. San Leon is also a great place to visit and hop aboard a vessel.

Rules & Regulations

Anglers 17 and older need to have a valid Texas fishing license. You can buy yours online, in a Texas Parks and Wildlife Department office, or in sporting goods stores, tackle shops, and even grocery stores

Trinity Bay Fishing Seasons

January

If your New Year’s resolution is to have fun, come fishing for Redfish and Trout. Trout won’t say no to any type of bait, whether it’s live or artificial.

February

Fishing opportunities are consistent throughout winter, so your best chances are still Redfish and Speckled Trout. Drift fishing should do the trick.

March
Black Drum enter their peak season in spring. If you’re out to get them, be patient – they won’t strike immediately, so wait for a real bite.
April

In April, you’ll notice more Flounder in the area. It’s common to catch them while drift fishing, but you should try the Texan specialty – Flounder gigging at night!

May

If you’re going towards the Gulf, you’ll have a good chance of catching Mackerel and different types of Sharks. Fishing in the bay still hasn’t hit its peak season.

June

Even though this is peak season for fishing in the Gulf, staying in the bay also brings lots of great action, where you can target Redfish, Black Drum, Specks, or Flounder.

July

If you want to avoid being on the water during the hottest month, try fishing from shore. This is a great way to target the same inshore species from a different angle.

August

This is the beginning of peak season for Redfish and Speckled Trout! Once you catch them, go for Flounder – there aren’t as many but they are always easy to catch.

September

Have you tried catching Sheepshead yet? They’re fun to target because they aren’t so easily fooled! They’ll nibble the bait and loosen it up, but won’t bite immediately.

October

This is the best time of year to go after an Inshore Grand Slam. Redfish, Flounder, and Speckled Trout are only a few hard pulls away!

November

You can still catch them all – the Big Three of Trinity Bay are at their peak and you’ll find them easily. But you’ll need to put in a bit more effort to catch them.

December

While other fish species lie low in December, Trout and Redfish are still present in good numbers. Try drift fishing, or switch to spinning.
