Fishing in Watts Bar Lake

Watts Bar Lake, Tennessee, welcomes anglers to one of the South’s premier fishing destinations, renowned for its diverse habitats and trophy-quality sportfish. Spanning over 39,000 acres across the Tennessee River, this reservoir offers 722 miles of scenic shoreline dotted with submerged timber, rocky points, and lush vegetation—ideal cover for thriving fish populations.

Year-round opportunities abound here, with largemouth and smallmouth bass leading the charge, particularly during spring spawns and fall feeding frenzies. Anglers also consistently reel in hefty striped bass, crappie schooling near structure, and hard-fighting catfish, including blue and channel varieties. The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency supplements natural stocks through annual replenishment, ensuring robust fisheries.

Seasonal patterns dictate tactics: sight-fishing shallow bays for bass in spring, targeting deep channels with Carolina rigs in summer, or night-fishing for catfish near inflows. With varied structure—from stumpy backwaters to open river channels—the lake suits every technique, whether casting topwater lures at dawn or vertical jigging for crappie. Its accessibility via multiple ramps and coves further elevates Watts Bar Lake as a versatile, unmatched angling haven.

If your catfish in June, make sure you’re going with someone that knows catfish. They’re coming off of spawn something I learned today and if you don’t know where to find them, you gonna have a long day suntanning. The bites generally a little slower within 30 minutes of water temperature and seeing where bait fish were, he knew exactly where to put us to put us on fish.

Captain let us know the big and small catfish we’re mixing more than normal with the spawn so it was harder to target the big boys but we landed lots of healthy 10 to 15 pounders. We were fishing for fillets to eat so it was perfect. He said post spawn was best to find hungry trophy fish

Always remember that this is fishing. Not catching. Nothing is guaranteed. You may not always catch your targeted fish for different reasons. The bite was slow, but, Cody still put us on fish. My boys just couldn’t get a Striper in the boat. They did enjoy the good fight though while they were hooked up.

Fishing in February is tough, do not come into it thinking it will be the best fishing of your life! That said, if you have the right guide, you WILL be successful. Smith Fishing Adventures, LLC, is why we were able to catch as much as we did.

I booked this trip for my husband for Father’s Day along with my son and son-in-law. They were so excited about the booking and Josh did not disappoint. All of them came home raving about the experience they had catching fish, learning from Josh, and boating on the river. Money well spent and worth every penny! We will definitely book with Josh again!
