Fishing in Yaquina Bay

If you find yourself in Newport, OR, checking out the Yaquina Bay fishing scene is a must. This estuary is wedged between the Yaquina River in the south and the Pacific Ocean in the west, so it offers the best of both worlds.

The area is known for its fantastic crabbing, namely Dungeness Crab. The crab population is so big that you can catch them any day of the year, but the season is closed in late summer and fall. If you prefer fishing with rods and reels, your passage to the ocean is open, and there you can target a variety of bottom dwellers, including Rockfish, Halibut, Cabezon, and Lingcod.

For even more variety, head to the Yaquina River in search of the top-notch Salmon and Steelhead bite. You’ll find great fish swimming around the bay and up the river in the fall, but for the biggest Steelhead, visit the area in the winter. The bay also has some Sturgeon hiding in its waters, so there’s something for just about everyone.

Whether you’d like a taste of freshwater or saltwater action, there’s a good number of fishing charters to take you to your prey. Local guides have spent years perfecting their routes to make sure you get your share of excitement. You can take your pick between half day and full trips, as well as crabbing expeditions.

When you book your charter online, the Newport Marina Boat Ramp is where you’ll meet your captain for your Yaquina Bay fishing adventure, so you're just a short hop from downtown..

Rules & Regulations

Charter guides will provide you with everything you need for your trip, all you have to do is get a valid Oregon fishing license. Everyone who’s 12 and older needs the license, and if you’re going crabbing and fishing, you’ll need a combined license for both shellfish and fishing.

Yaquina Bay Fishing Seasons

January

No matter what time of year it is, there’s always some exciting fishing action on the Yaquina Bay! In the middle of winter, you can look forward to excellent Trout fishing, as well as a solid Lingcod bite.

February

The weather isn’t great in February, but all you really need is layers of clothes, rain gear, and enthusiasm. Then, you can go after Crab, Lingcod, Steelhead, and even Sturgeon.

March

This is one of the top months to go after your limits of Lingcod and fill your coolers with delicious fish fillets. Steelhead are still biting in the river, and it’s a good time for some fly fishing.

April

Spring means more and more fishermen out and about, making the most out of the great weather. Join them and you could be rewarded with good Rockfish, Lingcod, and even Sturgeon.

May

The Halibut season is finally open! This is great news for avid bottom fishers searching for a good fight and colossal catches. When you go out with a charter, you’ll probably target both Halis and Lingcod at the same time.

June

Chinook Salmon are still not venturing into the Yaquina Bay, but there’s a good deal of them in the ocean waters – and you should make the most of it. Add some crabbing or bottom fishing, and you’ve got a winning combo!

July

This is an awesome fishing month, no matter what you’d like to target! Halibut and Lingcod are in their prime, crabbing is marvelous, and you can even go to the deeper waters to wrestle an Albacore Tuna.

August

Towards the end of summer, you can feel the fishing tides changing. Everybody’s expecting Chinook and Coho to arrive and, by the month’s end, more and more of these gorgeous fish find their way to the bay.

September

In the mood for epic Salmon catches? This is the time to hit the waters of the Yaquina Bay! Both Coho and Chinook are in the cards, and the action can be fast and furious. But the effort is worth it, as you get to go home with the most delicious fillets.

October

The fall months on the bay mean non-stop Salmon action that will take your breath away. You can find Kings that easily weigh up to 40–50 pounds and Coho who, though smaller, fight fiercely. This is what Salmon fishing dreams are made of!

November

Salmon are slowly but surely leaving the bay on their way to the spawning grounds, so if you’d still like to catch them, we’d suggest going up the Yaquina River. In the ocean, Lingcod are still very much biting.

December

Salmon are slowly but surely leaving the bay on their way to the spawning grounds, so if you’d still like to catch them, we’d suggest going up the Yaquina River. In the ocean, Lingcod are still very much biting.
