Fishing in Victoria

Nestled in the southeast of Australia, with the Bass Strait at its doorstep, Victoria is famous for its immense fishing potential. There are countless fishing hotspots to explore along the coast and inland, and the diversity of species is what draws in anglers of all levels. Fishing charters in Victoria are always ready to help you make the most of your time on the water.

The offshore action here is different compared to the surrounding states. Instead of Marlin, the big game fish that dominate the bluewater are Pacific Bluefin Tuna, a variety of Sharks and Snappers. In fact, Victoria is famous for its superb Pink Snapper fishing, especially if you come around in spring and summer.

Closer to shore, things are just as exciting. The bays are full of Australian Salmon, King George Whiting and Flathead. One of the most common catches are Gummy Sharks, who live here in big numbers. The freshwater bite shouldn’t be dismissed either – plenty of inland rivers carry excellent Bream, Rainbow and Brown Trout and Mulloway, which happens to be a local favourite, thanks to its size and fighting power.

Skippers have a variety of trips on offer and there’s something for every sensibility and preference. Shorter excursions will put you and your family on the reef fish and keep you closer to shore. Book a whole day on the boat, and you get to explore the bluewater and the possibility of getting a hard-fighting Bluefin on the line.

Most fishing charters in Victoria move out of Melbourne, Portland and Queenscliff.

Rules & Regulations

Before you hop on your charter boat, you’ll need to buy a fishing licence and have it with you while you fish. Your skipper will inform you about catch limits and regulations. If you’re fishing solo, make sure you familiarise yourself with the rules before you go.

Victoria Fishing Seasons

January

The height of summer is a great time to go fishing in beautiful Victoria! There’s more Pink Snapper and Yellowtail Amberjack every day and, closer to shore, Flathead, King George Whiting and Gummy Sharks are the most common catches.

February

Western Port and Port Phillip Bays are a joy to fish in February, with plenty of Garfish, Whiting and Gummy Sharks swimming around. This is the best time to head to Yarra River and target big Mulloway. Kingfish are at their peak, so reef fishing is fantastic.

March

March marks the start of autumn in Australia. Pink Snapper will soon be replaced by Salmon in the bays, while Yellowtail Kingfish are still going strong. There’s more and more Tuna in the deep waters, which is always good news.

April

Swordfish and Tuna are at their peak offshore, so head to Queenscliff to test yourself against these strong fighters. There’s no shortage of fishing charters in Victoria ready to take you out. The inshore bite is still going strong if you prefer staying closer to land.

May

Big game fishing is thrilling this time of year with good chances of hooking into a trophy catch. Kingfish, Swordfish and Tuna are making rounds offshore, and anglers are following close behind. Inshore, things are slowing down but there’s still fish to catch.

June

Trout fishing is closed in most of Victoria’s rivers, but you can still have great success fishing for Rainbows and Browns in Eildon Pondage. If the weather allows, you can travel offshore and prowl the waters for Swordfish and Tuna.

July

It’s the middle of the winter, so the fishing action slows down, but the bite can be very productive in the bays. Try your luck with King George Whiting, Squid or Garfish inshore or head further out, where Pacific Blue and Albacore Tuna await.

August

The weather is still unpredictable, but that doesn’t mean you can’t fish. You’re most likely to hook into Squid, Whiting and Gummy Sharks in the bays and, if you’re up for a change of pace, try Trout fishing in Eildon Pondage.

September

It’s the most beautiful time of the year and spring brings exciting times on the Tasman Sea. Beat the crowds and hit the bays for some delicious Pink Snapper. Murray Cod is closed to harvest through November, except for anglers fishing in Lake Eildon.

October

Snapper fishing is excellent in October, and you’ll find a lot of fellow anglers around the reefs in search of their next meal and/or big catch. Trout fishing in the rivers is starting to pick up momentum again, with Rainbow Trout in the spotlight.

November

It’s Snapper time in Victoria! Garfish and Flathead are biting more and in the bay as well, and you can always reel in a Gummy Shark or two. Freshwater lovers will have a great time on the rivers, where both Brown and Rainbow Trout bite.

December

As summer reaches its peak, so does the fishing season. The reefs are teeming with good Pink Snapper, Silver Trevally and Kingfish all up for grabs. Inshore, it’s prime time to go after Australia’s favorite fish, Flathead, and finish the year with a bang.
