Fishing in Alabama

If you’re searching for variety on your fishing trips, look no further than the Yellowhammer State. Featuring some of the finest reef fishing in the world, as well as amazing inshore and deep sea angling, Alabama fishing charters offer it all. All that’s left for you to do is to get ready for the adventure of a lifetime.

This corner of the South is often referred to as the “Red Snapper Capital of the World,” and it’s no exaggeration to call it so. During the Snapper season, anglers return to land with full limits of these delicious fish. Of course, other reef fish such as Triggerfish, Amberjack, and Grouper are also on the menu.

Outside of the Snapper season, or for anglers who like to mix it up, many captains offer trolling trips. Depending on how far offshore you go, these trips will net you King and Spanish Mackerel, Mahi Mahi, Sailfish, Tuna, and occasionally even a Blue Marlin.

If you’re bringing your family and prefer a more relaxing trip, staying close to shore will hook you up with Redfish, Speckled Trout, Sheepshead, Flounder, and more. You can also give freshwater fishing a try, with lakes such as Guntersville and Wheeler featuring outstanding Bass fishing.

Half day and 3/4 day trips will give you the chance to experience the inshore and nearshore waters. For offshore fishing, you’ll need more time. Charter captains can be found all along Alabama’s Gulf Coast, with Orange Beach, Gulf Shores, Dauphin Island, and Fairhope being the hot spots.

Rules & Regulations

If you’re fishing aboard a charter boat, your captain will take care of the licenses. Solo anglers between the ages of 16 and 65 will need to purchase fishing licenses whether they plan on fishing in freshwater or saltwater.

Alabama Fishing Seasons

January

Rough weather can make offshore trips unreliable in January. Stay inshore and enjoy peak Sheepshead season instead! These guys are a local favorite, and make for great table fare.

February

Sheepshead are still biting hard inshore. If you somehow get bored of them, there are plenty of Trout, Red and Black Drum, and Gray Snapper around. Offshore, the Tuna bite is warming up.

March

Triggerfish is open for harvest in March, and everyone wants a piece of these tasty little guys! Each spring, Cobia migrate along the Alabama Coast, giving you even more reason to hit the reefs.

April

The bluewater bite really picks up in April, with Mahi Mahi, Yellowfin and Blackfin Tuna, and even the occasional Sailfish showing up. Inshore, it’s your last chance to catch Sheepshead.

May

Amberjack are sometimes open for harvest in May. Even if they’re not, you’ve got plenty of reasons to fish the reefs, with Cobia, Vermillion Snapper, and the last of the Triggerfish.

June

It’s Red Snapper season! Boats all around the Gulf head offshore in search of delicious bottom fish. You need to book these trips well in advance, but you’re pretty much guaranteed to catch your limit!

July

The Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo sees thousands of anglers head offshore for Blue Marlin, Sailfish, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, and Yellowfin Tuna. Inshore, Redfish and Tripletail are biting.

August

Amberjack is open for harvest, and Vermillion Snapper are in their prime. You’ve got the full cast out in the bluewaters and plenty of Trout and Redfish inshore. Face the heat, and you’ll be rewarded.

September

The Tarpon have moved on by September, but you’ve still got a ton of Redfish, Trout, and Flounder to fish for. Further out, you have Tripletail, Amberjack, Vermillion Snapper, and more.

October

While it’s no longer the prime time to hook into Blue Marlin, there are still a few White Marlin left. October is your last chance to keep Amberjack, and your last real chance to bag Tripletail.

November

Trout are back with a vengeance in November, and there are some monster Black Drum around, too. Both these guys are tastier than Turkey, so get out there and get some!

December

Sheepshead fishing starts to pick up in December, and Redfish, Seatrout, and Flounder are all on form. Throw in cool weather and fewer mosquitos, and you’re looking at perfect flats fishing!
