FAQs about Fishing Charters in Hawaii

The average price for a private 4 hour Hawaii fishing trip is $740, while an 8 hour private trip will cost you $1,051 based on prices on FishingBooker.com.

According to customer reviews, Ocean Addict Hawaii llc, Oahu Pelagic Sportfishing, and Seelife Adventures - The Big Island are some of the most popular fishing charters in Hawaii. Full list of top fishing charters in Hawaii.

Ocean Addict Hawaii llc, Oahu Pelagic Sportfishing, and Seelife Adventures - The Big Island all received great reviews from families who booked fishing trips in Hawaii.

The most popular fish species you can target are Dolphin (Mahi Mahi), Yellowfin Tuna, and Wahoo. Top fishing techniques include trolling, deep sea fishing, and heavy tackle. Offshore fishing, nearshore fishing, and reef fishing are commonly offered by local guides.

Want to cast a line in paradise? Hop aboard one of the many fishing charters in Hawaii. There’s postcard-perfect azure waters and white sandy beaches to explore, as well as some world-famous fish on offer. Hawaii is a known deep sea sportfishing haven, but that’s not where the action ends. With reefs, flats, and freshwater fishing grounds on offer, you can cast off on the adventure of your dreams.

Head out on a deep sea fishing excursion, and you’ll encounter year-round Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Tuna, and Billfish. In some locations, the seafloor drops to a thousand feet just a mile from shore. To get the most out of your adventure, though, a full day trip is a must. More of a reef fishing enthusiast? Plumb underwater structure for local bottom fish including Long-Tail Red Snapper (Onaga) and Short-Tail Red Snapper (Ehu) on a shorter trip.

If you want to spend even less time traveling, explore Hawaii's flats for Bonefish. A half day trip is the perfect introduction to these waters, and you can even try out fly fishing. There’s plenty of inshore action for freshwater fans, too. Largemouth Bass, Peacock Bass, and Channel Catfish can be found in a variety of reservoirs and waterways, with half and full day trips on offer.

There’s an impressive number of departure points dotted all over the Aloha State. Big Island’s Kailua-Kona offers incredible deep sea action, Maui is home to lots of reefs (and spearfishing action!), Kauai has a great Billfish bite as well as an abundance of freshwater fish...the opportunities are endless!

Rules & Regulations

You don’t need a license to fish in Hawaii, unless you’re freshwater fishing. Some species are subject to strict regulations, such as Onaga and Ehu, but your captain will be able to fill you in.

January

Bigeye Tuna make for a delicious feast for offshore anglers in January. Head out and bag one for dinner, then visit the Oahu Fringe Festival to soak up the local arts scene.

February

The Maui Whale Festival gathers 20,000 visitors each year to celebrate these majestic creatures. More into fish than mammals? Shortbill Spearfish and Bigeye Tuna are both on fire.

March

Honolulu Festival manages to combine an all-out party with a genuine display of ethnic and economic solidarity. It’s worth visiting if you can tear yourself away from the Striped Marlin bite.

April

Black and Striped Marlin, Spearfish, Bigeye Tuna, Ono (Wahoo), and Mahi Mahi are all amazing in April. On the other end of the scale, this is one of the best months for Hawaii Bass fishing.

May

Blue Marlin arrive in a big way in May, joining their Black and Striped cousins for a month of incredible Billfishing. Shortbill Spearfish are also around, so you could be in with a Super Grand Slam!

June

The Hawaii Marlin Tournament Series starts in style with the Kona Kickoff and the Firecracker Open. Off the water, the Maui Film Festival is a great place to relax after a hard day at sea.

July

Tournament fever burns strong, with the Kona Throw Down and Skins Marlin Derby, not to mention the Blue Marlin World Cup. Check out the Honolulu Ukulele Festival if you get the time.

August

The Kona Shootout Big Game Tournament and Big Island Marlin Tournament give the pro teams no rest in August. Ahi (Yellowfin Tuna) are on fire, and make for the best Tuna fishing Hawaii sees all year.

September

Tournament season draws to a close with Kona’s It’s a Wrap Tournament. The whole state comes alive in an explosion of color during the month-long Aloha Festivals.

October
Want to see Hawaii through the eyes of the locals? Visit the Hawaii International Film Festival to watch locally-made documentaries about island life. Afterward, head offshore for late-season Mahi Mahi action.

November

The fishing tournaments may be over, but the surfers are just getting started. The Vans Triple Crown tournament series kicks off on Oahu’s breathtaking North Shore.

December

The Vans Triple Crown draws to a close, just as the Honolulu City Lights festival brings the town to life in a spectacle of seasonal cheer. Bigeye Tuna are firmly back on the menu by December.

Do it! It’s fishing. Not catching! But if you’re somewhat of a fisherman or outdoors person, you’d understand. Sometimes the fish has the better of you and sometimes you have the better of them. The important thing is to pay attention to the crew to see how they are changing up rigs and tactics to put you on fish!

If the idea is to catch fish, there are definitely fish out there. The family that was out there on Captain Harry's boat before us caught four nice size tunas, we caught one. For us on our trip, the weather was great, the waves were not too high, no one got sea sick, and it was a great way to spend four hours.

Make sure the captain and crew are knowledgeable about what you are catching. There are a lot of endangered species or illegal to catch fish in hawaii so if not could get in some big trouble real fast

Fishing anywhere is unpredictable; fish don’t bite, aren’t there, the weather is crappy, the water is turbulent, etc. The experience is worth it.

This is definitely a first time, small catch, family fun type of outing. Boat was great for a party of 4, unsure how it would be for more people. Please note, taking seasick meds with you is probably a good idea, even if you think you won't need them.

Jay is solid. Starts right on time and assures you get what you pay for. There are no guarantees, especially when it comes to fish, but even though I didn’t land anything I enjoyed Jay and the whole process and experience. Jay might look older but he’s still extremely sharp and has his wits well about him; he feeds off your questions if you know what to ask so be smart about it and timely. I hope to return based upon the guidance and advice Jay gave me. Highly recommended. Enjoy.

Great crew that knows what they’re doing. We didn’t have much luck for fish that day, couple bites and got one reeled in. Crew was happy and knowledgeable though and seemed like the other boats that went out didn’t get anything at all so we did ok. Waters are choppy that far out all the time so definitely take some Dramamine.

John and his partner really do care about your fishing experience! Everyone had great personalities! The boat was spotless, very clean. Fishing gear was very nice as well! If I ever get a chance to revisit Kailua Kona Hawaii again I will definitely be finding John and going fishing!
