Frequently Asked Questions about Fishing Charters in Maine

According to customer reviews, Eagle's Rock Tackle & Charter, North East Salt Water Maine, and Sea Time Fishing Charters are some of the most popular fishing charters in Maine. Full list of top fishing charters in Maine.

The average price for a private 4 hour Maine fishing trip is $433, while an 8 hour private trip will cost you $840 based on prices on FishingBooker.com.

Eagle's Rock Tackle & Charter, North East Salt Water Maine, and Sea Time Fishing Charters all received great reviews from families who booked fishing trips in Maine.

The most popular fish species you can target are Striped Bass, Smallmouth Bass, and Atlantic Mackerel. Top fishing techniques include Light Tackle, Jigging, and Spinning. Inshore fishing, river fishing, and lake fishing are commonly offered by local guides.

The "Pine Tree State" is known for its greenery. But did you know Maine has excellent freshwater and saltwater fisheries, too? Blessed with thousands of lakes, miles of rivers and streams, and access to the Atlantic Ocean, Maine has endless fishing opportunities for seasoned anglers and novices alike. Just hop on any Maine fishing charter and have the time of your life!

Fishing in Maine means going after freshwater headliners like Landlocked Salmon and Brook Trout. Heading offshore implies you’ll be on a Bluefin Tuna and Shark pursuit. However, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Maine is home to a variety of species from Lake Trout, Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Pike, and Perch, to American Pollock, Haddock, and Atlantic Mackerel.

Maine will reward you with year-round fishing spots. Winter is when the real fun begins. Cold fronts are reserved for ice fishing. And once the ice melts, any river or stream will be a fly fishing heaven. Half day trips are suitable for beginners, but a full day out on the water hits the sweet spot. For the more adventurous among you, we recommend 10 hour deep sea fishing marathons.

The truth is that you’ll be spoilt for choice when fishing in Maine. Wherever you cast your line from east to west, you’ll be in for a treat. Moosehead, Sebago, and Belgrade Lakes are must-fish inland destinations. Portland and Freeport are perfect offshore departure points. And when in doubt, just reach out to one of the numerous Maine fishing charters and they’ll be at your service.

Rules & Regulations

Every angler over 16 years old will need a fishing license. Mainers pay a lot of attention to their fisheries, so angling is closely monitored. There are bag, size, and even gear limitations. Residents and visitors to the state will have different permit options. So, if you’re planning to go fishing in Maine, make sure you get familiar with the current rules and regulations ahead of time.

January

There are plenty of ice fishing derbies to partake in from January to March. Moosehead Lake offers a three-day event in January.

February

Head to the ice fishing derby at Round Pond this month, or the Chocolate Festival on land. Lots to do for the whole family.

March

Another month, another ice fishing Derby! The Maine Ice Fishin’ Derby and Benefit can be done on all legal waters. Last month for ice fishing!

April

By mid-April the ice will have melted and the fisheries opened. Get out there and start hooking Trout, Salmon, and Bass.

May

This is the peak for surface fishing. You can troll the lakes for Salmon and Trout. Maine is beautiful in the spring, with crisp highs of 62°F.

June

It’s harder to surface fish now, as they start to descend to cooler depths. Grab you jigging gear! Maine B.A.S.S. Nation has a tournament in June.

July

July is a great month for Mackerel, tournaments, and festivals. Head to China Lake for Mainely Bass tournament and Yarmouth for their Clam festival.

August

It’s all about the Maine Lobster Festival in August – an awesome Lobster spectacular! Opening night sees the crowning of the Maine Sea Goddess!

September

Inshore, fish come back up to the surface, making perfect conditions for fly fishing. Fall fishing is strictly catch and release in Maine.

October

Join in the Somerset Bassmasters Tournament on the Belgrade Lakes. Will you catch the biggest fish?

November

November is a slow fishing month, so on land join in with the Thanksgiving festivities, like the Turkey Trot in Portland!

December

Some lakes allow ice fishing before the official season begins in January. Check the ice thickness and regulations and begin fishing!

Book a morning trip to increase your odds and stay away from the heat. The ocean is rougher than you would think, keep that in mind if you have a weak stomach and if you have balance issues.

Take a camera with you. You will have the opportunity to take a lot of pictures heading out of the shoreline. Have a clear mind and listen the Captain John as he will instruct you on the proper techniques for catching the blue fin tuna. This is important as a lot happens when you hook up on a tuna.

Had a great time fishing with Captain Joe! The weather conditions werenโ€™t perfect but he was still willing to take me son and I out if we wanted to! We caught a lot of fish and heโ€™s extremely knowledgeable and teaches fishing skills patiently. He made sure we had the best time possible and had a great time! Wish we could go out with him again if we were here longer!

How much prettier could it get? Cool morning with threats of sprinkles, but beautiful leaves, and Capt Tyson made us feel warmly welcomed. As expected fishing was slow this time of year, but we did hook up on our first stop. Mission accomplished, and a bunch of great memories were made. Thanks, Capt David, for a great time! Donna was a fantastic captain! The 3 hour trip was perfect for my 13 year old. We would highly recommend this charter. On top of catching stripers, we saw sturgeon breach the water, a seal, an eagle and many other cool birds.

Capt. Donna was a total pro! She put us on the fish, shared her knowledge of the area and how she fishes it, and was an absolute pleasure. As avid anglers from NY, it was amazing to learn new techniques and to see new waters. She and her brother Capt. Tom welcomed us back to their bait and tackle shop, and we left with a new reel, rigs, and great memories. I couldnโ€™t recommend them enough!
