Fishing in Maryland

With water making up almost a fifth of Maryland's territory, it doesn't come as a surprise that the fishing is absolutely amazing. Whether it's freshwater, bay, or ocean angling, you'll be spoiled for choice. Maryland fishing charters cater to everyone, so it's all about picking what you want to catch the most.

To freshwater anglers and fly fishermen, Maryland offers over a hundred streams, rivers, and reservoirs to explore. Gunpowder Falls and the Savage River feature world-class Trout fishing. The famous Potomac River is abundant with Bass, Catfish, Snakehead, and other stillwater favorites.

However, most anglers visit Maryland to fish the Chesapeake Bay. The bay is famous for its exhilarating Striped Bass fishery, but it'll also give you a chance to fish for many other species. Some of these include Redfish, Bluefish, Flounder, and Croaker.

The Free State also features fantastic nearshore and offshore fishing. Most of it takes place out of Ocean City, situated on the Atlantic coast. Nearshore, you'll catch Seabass, Tautog, and other reef species. Offshore, in the Gulf Stream, you'll see the likes of Mahi Mahi, Tuna, and Marlin biting the end of your line.

While it's possible to fish year-round, most charter captains in Maryland operate between April and mid-December. If you're fishing the bay or close to shore in the ocean, half day trips will give you plenty of action. Gulf Stream trips require more time, as you'll have to go at least 55 miles offshore.

Rules & Regulations

Saltwater charter captains will cover your license if you're fishing aboard their boat. Solo anglers 16 and up will need to buy a permit, whether you're fishing freshwater or saltwater. If you're keen on catching some Trout, you'll need to get a Trout stamp with your fishing license.

Maryland Fishing Seasons

  • January

Fishing at the start of the year is far from the best it can be. If you're up for some Tautog action, go for it by all means, but you'll have to wait for the other fish.

  • February

The Tautog bite is still going strong, and you can also look forward to Striped Bass if you're near Ocean City. Most captains are waiting for warmer times.

  • March

March is when the inshore bite finally starts to recover. Take advantage or head to the Potomac River and get in on the catch-and-release Striped Bass action.

  • April

The month of April is a great time to fish for trophy-sized Striped Bass. Just make sure you're up to date on the regulations before you head out, as they vary from season to season.

  • May

Mid-May marks the official beginning of the Striped Bass season. You'll also start seeing Flounder in the bay, as well as numerous other species.

  • June

The Memorial Day Tournament kicks off the best time of year for offshore anglers. Head down to Ocean City and go after the big boys right now!

  • July

As summer continues, the fishing just keeps getting better and better all around. Saltwater or freshwater, Tuna or Largemouth Bass, it's a buyer's market out there.

  • August

Were you aware that Ocean City is home to the largest Billfish tournament anywhere in the world? Well, now you are! Lots of fun for both anglers and spectators.

  • September

While the tournament season might start slowing down after an extensive couple of months, the fish are still biting like mad. Do yourself a favor and check out the awesome fishing.

  • October

October is one of the best times to go Striped Bass fishing, as they get ready for winter. Inland rivers and streams are stocked with Trout, offering excellent fly fishing opportunities.

  • November

November is the last train to hop on for anyone interested in going after Speckled Trout or Flounder until the end of the year. Hop on while you can!

  • December

Before the charter season ends, most anglers will be fully devoted to Rockfishing by the dozens. If that sounds appealing, you'll have the time of your life out here.
