Fishing in Tennessee

Tennessee offers some of the finest freshwater fishing in the United States, with over 20,000 miles of streams, sparkling reservoirs, and legendary rivers that create an angler's paradise. The state's diverse waterways support an impressive array of species, including trophy Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass, feisty Crappie, hard-fighting Catfish, and prized Rainbow, Brown, and Brook Trout in the cooler mountain-fed streams. East Tennessee's Watauga, Norris, and Cherokee Lakes provide exceptional trolling and casting opportunities for Lake Trout and Bass against the stunning backdrop of the Great Smoky Mountains, while Middle and West Tennessee's river systems and reservoirs like Chickamauga Lake teem with Crappie, Catfish, and Bass.

Fishing techniques here are as varied as the species themselves—from fly fishing in the clear headwaters of mountain streams to deep-water trolling for Walleye, casting topwater lures for explosive Bass strikes, or even "noodling" for hefty Flathead Catfish. The state's conservation efforts ensure sustainable fisheries, with year-round opportunities that cater to all skill levels. Whether pursuing record-breaking Musky on Melton Hill Reservoir, targeting Striper on specialized charters, or introducing youngsters to Bluegill fishing on family-friendly tours, Tennessee's waterways deliver unforgettable experiences amidst beautiful natural settings.

Tennessee Fishing Seasons

January

The start of the year can be a great time to target Smallmouth Bass on Dale Hollow or Blue Catfish on the Tennessee River. The bite tends to be slower, so patience and a warm outfit are key!

February

You can continue to enjoy good fishing for Smallmouth Bass on Dale Hollow, or try your luck fishing for Stripers on the lower half of Norris Lake.

March

Smallmouth Bass fishing is picking up momentum on Dale Hollow, while Crappie are becoming more active on Kentucky Lake and Percy Priest.

April

Largemouth Bass are beginning to bite more. Try your luck in Pickwick Lake and other waters using a shallow-to-medium diving crankbait in shad colors.

May

Largemouth Bass are still at their peak, while many other species are also giving anglers in TN a run for their money! Grab a guide and come catch Bass, Sauger, Trout, Catfish and more!

June

Smallmouth Bass are past their peak, but fishing for them at night is still spectacular. Cast your line in deeper parts of the lakes to catch big Bluegill.

July

In July, you can enjoy excellent fishing for Catfish on the Mississippi River and Largemouth Bass in Kentucky Lake.

August

Anglers throughout the state are hooking into Largemouth Bass left and right. Head to Reelfoot Lake for remarkable Bluegill fishing and mix things up a little.

September

Autumn is a great time to fish for Striped Bass, especially in the headwaters of Norris Lake. Meanwhile, Trout and Smallmouth Bass are ready to give you the fight of your life!

October

December

Come December, anglers on Dale Hollow have a chance to fish for Musky. Bass and Crappie will continue providing action all through winter, but expect the bite to be slower.
