Crayfish Fishing

Crayfish fishing is a fun, hands-on way to fill a cooler and make great memories. Crayfish, also called Crawfish or Crawdads, live in fresh water and hide under rocks and logs. Anglers target them because they are tasty, abundant in many places, and easy to catch with simple gear.

You can catch Crayfish with traps, hand nets, or a baited line. Traps work best in creeks, ponds, and lake edges. Bait them with oily fish scraps or chicken, set them near cover, and check them after a few hours. A hand net and a flashlight also work well at night, when Crayfish are most active. Move slowly, lift rocks with care, and scoop from behind to avoid the claws.

Expect a relaxed, close-to-shore experience that suits kids and first-time anglers. You will spend time along banks or in shallow water, not on rough seas. Wear sturdy shoes or boots, and bring gloves, a bucket or cooler with ice, and a simple ruler to check size if needed. A headlamp helps after dark. Handle Crayfish gently and release any you do not plan to keep.
