Kahawai (Arripis trutta)

Kahawai

  • Food Value Good
  • Game Qualities Excellent
  • Habitats Inshore, Nearshore, River

The name Kahawai comes from the Maori words Kaha (brave or strong) and Wai (water). It's no surprise, then, that Kawahai fishing is much more intense than this fish's modest size would let on. This highly-prized sports fish is a favorite amongst inshore and surf fishermen in New Zealand and southeastern Australia.

Across the sea in Australia, Kahawai is known as a Salmon. It might surprise you, then, that this inshore fish is not related to a Salmon at all. But, like its Australian name might suggest, the fight is well worth it - it is extremely tasty.
