  • Game Qualities Average
  • Habitats Inshore, Nearshore, Offshore, Reef

Also known as Filefish, Leatherjackets are a striking fish. There are actually over a hundred species in the family, with most of them living in Australia.Often caught inshore but also inhabiting deeper reefs further out to sea, they make a very striking image when caught - and they're not bad to eat, either.

How to catch Leatherjackets

Most anglers don't target them specifically, but if you have your sights set on this beautiful creature, make sure to head out with some ultra-light tackle and small pieces of cut bait. Look for them around estuaries and harbours. Some species may be found much further offshore, but they can be considered a nuisance as their sharp teeth can cut through the line while you're hoping to target larger fish.
