Pearl Perch (Glaucosoma Scapulare )

Pearl Perch

  • Size 2-6 kg
  • Food Value Excellent
  • Game Qualities Average
  • Habitats Nearshore, Offshore, Reef, Wreck

There may be no tastier fish off the east coast of Australia than Pearl Perch, commonly called “Pearlies.” This sought-after delicacy is actually one in a family of four Pearl Perches, but Pearlies are the only ones found off of the country’s eastern shore. Hook into one of these on your next fishing trip Down Under, and you’re in for a treat!

How Big?

Most Pearlies weigh 2-3 kg, but are known to grow as large as 6 kg on occasion. The maximum size they can reach is 7.3 kg and 70 cm in length.

Where to Find Pearl Perch

This fish is endemic to eastern Australia and inhabits a relatively small area offshore between central and southern Queensland down to New South Wales. Pearlies swim in waters up to 200 m deep and mainly stick to coral reefs, wrecks, rocky ledges, and steep coral drop offs.

How to Fish

The trick to catching Pearl Perch is bottom fishing. Squid, Octopus, and cut fish strips all make for effective bait. Fresh bait is best, and don’t pull it away too quickly—give the fish time to bite. When fishing in northern waters, metal jigs and soft plastics also work well.

Good to Eat?

Pearl Perch is an exceptional eating fish, one of the finest you can get in Australia.
