Blue sharks belong to the family of requiem sharks and lurk in the depths of cold waters worldwide.

Preferring temperatures between 45 and 60°F makes these sharks feel at home in waters as deep as 1200ft, but they are known to feed at the surface as well. According to attack statistics, they are relatively highly rated, but are generally not considered to be among the most aggressive sharks.

How big

Blue sharks are large fish, speculated to be able to grow up to 20ft, but the largest one so far was caught at only 12.6ft.

They are widely dispersed throughout the world's oceans and are present in many seas, including the Mediterranean, but excluding the Baltic and Red Seas, and are rare in the Gulf of Mexico.

How to catch

Fishing for Blue sharks can be done by chumming and casting or trolling. As all sharks, they are voracious and will take fish such as mackerel or herring, squid, eels and other live or dead whole or cut bait. They are not considered very good game and are relatively easy to reel in.

Good to eat?

They are poor eating and the flesh ammoniates quickly.
