Tarakihi are among the most popular bottom fish of south Australia and New Zealand. They are small, easy to catch and make for great table fare.

These bottom dwellers can be compared to Pink Snappers, however they only grow to a fraction of Squire sizes. They are schooling fish normally present over reefy/rocky bottoms up to 100m deep, but also caught from the shore at certain locations.

How big

Tarakihi are quite small, rarely growing over 1.5kg.


The species is mostly found off New Zealand and the southern half of Australia, but can also be caught off southern Brazil.

How to catch

Fishing for Tarakihi can be done on a a dropper or a flasher rig, using a variety of small baitfish or strip fish such as skipjack or pilchard. They will also take small metal jigs and softbaits. Here is an excellent article for further reading on the proper fishing techniques.

They are easy and fun to catch, as the schools are active and voracious.
