The Bigeye Trevally is among the smaller members of the Carangidae family, which encompasses all Jacks and Trevallies. It's a hard fighting fish like most of its relatives, however, with a somewhat higher rating as food.

How big

Adults can grow up to almost 4ft and over 30lbs, with common catches being between 6 and 8lbs.

The species inhabits tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific Ocean, ranging from east Africa to the west Americas (mostly off Mexico), including the northern half of Australia. It's replaced by the closely related Horse-eye Jack in the Atlantic Ocean.

How to catch

Bigeye Trevally is found mostly in coastal waters over reefs up to about 300ft of depth, with juveniles caught in freshwater environments as well.

Like most similar fish, Bigeye Trevally is also caught by trolling or casting live or cut natural bait such as herrings, mullet, anchovies, garfish or squid, but various artificials as well, like plastic fish/squid imitations, spoons, plugs, feathers, softhead plastic lures, rope lures and flies. They're not fussy eaters.

Good to eat?

The pinkish flesh is not consumed on a large scale, but is said to be of good taste. It's also used as strip bait and in chum.
