- Your host at the Tarpon Club, legendary fly fisherman Alejandro Vega Cruz, was born on the Island of Holbox. Until he was 6, he lived at Cabo Catoche where his grandfather, and then father, were the lighthouse keepers and coconut farmers. Better known as Sandflea, he’s been in love with fishing since he was a small boy, and started to guide at the age of 19 on Cozumel and Isla Blanca, Cancún. From there, he began guiding on Holbox and continues to do so currently, managing the Tarpon Club Isla Holbox. A lifetime of passion for the sport has not only given him a wealth of knowledge on the intricacies of fly fishing and marine life but also earned him lauded status among elite fishermen and guides alike around the world. Sandflea, the co-founder of the Ecoalianza Holbox Conservation Trust and collaborator with Bonefish & Tarpon Trust, is also active in the island’s environmental stewardship.
