HOOKED at first Bend! The mystery of the unknown is what I love now with the Gulf of Mexico. I grew up bream, bass and catfishing. Whether it's casting or catching there's nothing better than being on the water. I have a variety of techniques for the inshore fish but really love the feel of that explosion on artificial lures. I do a lot of bottom fishing, trolling and jigging.

My friends and I had an absolutely stellar afternoon fishing with Captain Billy. As best man for an upcoming wedding, it was my job to plan a deep sea fishing trip, and it couldn’t have gone better! The captain was very kind, knowledgeable, and had a great sense of humor. All of my friends including myself each caught a red snapper that we could legally keep, which was well beyond my expectations. We really enjoyed the tackle that he had (the color coded fishing line was the amazing because it took the guess work out of measuring depth). After getting off the boat, the icing on the metaphorical cake was that we were able to take our catch nextdoor (still in the icechest) to the restaurant, Cobalt, and they cooked our fresh catch for $15 which included 2 sides. Captain Billy did an amazing job, and it was the best possible trip you could give a friend that’s about to get married. If I were ever to plan another deep sea fishing trip, Captain Billy would immediately be the first person I would contact. I still have a smile on my face three days later as I write review this despite my sunburn (its just part of having really, really pale skin). I’ve included some pictures of the snapper throats we had deep fried at Cobalt

Where do I start? We searched and searched and searched for the perfect fishing trip for our Gulf Shores vacation. Somewhere were overly and some were $50 per person. This one fell somewhere in the middle and we just had a gut feeling this one was right for us. Before the trip even began, Captain Billy touched base with us a day or two to update us on how the fishing was going down there and that he looked forward to meeting us and taking us out. I’m guessing other trips don’t have that kind of Personal Touch. When we arrived, the boat was clean and we introduced ourselves. He helped us with our cooler onto the boat and it wasn’t long before we were off into the sun rise. On the way to our first fishing hole he explained a little bit about what we were going to do for the day. He will let you be as hands-on or as hands off as you want to be but we were the type of family to jump right in there and bait our our own hooks. He gave everyone a rundown on how the rods operated and it wasn’t long before we landed our first red snapper. At one point three out of four of us had fish on our lines. Even the smaller ones put up a fight and the bigger ones were fun even for this grown man. Our teenage kids were having a great time catching all of the red snappers and Captain Billy was extremely patient with them in every aspect. We caught near our limit at the first hole so that gave us some time to go to a different hole and possibly catch some bigger red snappers and use some lighter tackle for some smaller fish as well. The knowledge Captain Billy has was very helpful and he knew where the state of Alabama have dropped some artificial cover like barges and tanks for the fish to congregate around. We parked our selves on top of our second fishing hole and we were back to catching fish immediately. We caught four or five different varieties of fish here but a couple of them are out of season and we weren’t able to keep them but the thrill of the catch was still exciting. Here is where it got interesting. I had a pretty good bump on my line and then I had hooked into a pretty big fish. I told the captain that I had a big one on and that he better get his dipnet to help scoop the fish out of the water. After about 15 minutes of fighting the fish we were all wondering , including the captain, what this could possibly be? May be a state record red snapper or a massive Cobia? I fought the fish until my muscles we’re burning and he was about to pull me in a time or two.  I fought until I couldn’t fight anymore and his deck hand strapped on a special belt that allowed him more leverage and he took over. After another long fight, we finally got to see what I had hooked into. An 8 foot long 350-pound bull nose shark came to the surface. This was caught on the same tackle we were catching the 5 and 6 pound red snappers. We never would have dreamed this could have happened but it made it worth the money spent. We all had an adrenaline rush and the captain said “That’s what’s fun about fishing out here. You just never know.” He stopped at one more hole on the way back at the end of the trip and caught some more fish. Captain Billy is the only way to go when you come to Gulf Shores for your fishing trip. We shared pictures back and forth and I feel like we’ve made a friend with him and we are already planning to come back and use him again. I know this is a long review but he is very deserving of it. If you and your family are searching the web for the perfect trip for your family, stop searching now because Captain Billy and Bent Oufitters Fishing is the way to go.
On a side note we had contemplated a dolphin cruise. Glad we saved our money because we had Dolphins playing within a short stone’s throw of the boat while fishing. Maybe ninety to a hundred feet away. The captain said this happens a lot. With the money we saved not purchasing a dolphin cruise, we had a nice young kid at the dock clean our fish and we took a cooler full of fresh red snapper home.

Thanks to Capt. Billy Howell of Bent Outfitters for a great fishing experience! This was my first time fishing in the Gulf, and it was a memorable one to say the least. On our first day we had a blast catching red snapper. The second day we fished inshore and tore the speckled and white trout up. Capt. Billy was very knowledgeable and taught me a lot about salt water fishing. He put us on fish all day both days. It was a great relaxed atmosphere and I made some great new friends on my trip. I can’t wait for the opportunity to get back down there and fish some more. Bent Outfitters is definitely a top notch chartering service, and I would highly recommend them to anyone who wants to have a great time on the water and come home with fish in the cooler.

Arrived in gulf shores in hopes of finding a quality charter on less than 24 hours notice…cpt Howell rearranged his personal schedule to accommodate our request….We were thinking the worst but received the best…..We not only caught our limits but were given knowledge of new tactics to use in our own back yard….the boat was clean organized and the crew was as finely tuned as the equipment used….We were so impressed we requested a second trip and again made special accommodations for our needs…We made not only memories with Billy but new friends….my highest recommendations seem inadequate for the care and service we received…..look no further….You have found the right captain in Billy Howell.
