Captain
Lou Baggett
Member since April 2018
Englewood, United States
- Background
- Captain Lou was born in Osprey, Florida. For many generations, his mother's side of the family in SW FL were commercial fishermen and his father's side were outdoorsmen and recreational fishermen in the same area. Learning at an early age the value of giving back from both families is the core value of sharing Captain Lou's life with the beautiful natural resources. What a place to grow up for a kid who loves to fish! Early on, the captain was taught the impact and relationship that he played in sharing coastal islands, beaches, and bays with the marine and birdlife. It has been his life's undertaking to understand the relationship he shares with all creatures and to preserve that delicate balance so that many generations to come can enjoy what exists today. He has spent the majority of his life on SW Florida coastal waters, involving himself in keeping the waterways clean and educating people on the need to maintain a clean and unspoiled ecosystem.
- Techniques
- Captain Lou uses light spinning tackle, live bait, and hunt bays, beaches, and coastal islands, where the waters are calm. He fishes Tarpon on the beach and in the backcountry. You and he will hunt it by waiting for the fish to "show" in the shallow waters. Sight casting live Crab to pods of hundreds of rolling fish in the clear shallow water and hearing the cry "Fish On" only enhances the fishing experience. When the fish is hooked, you may normally expect it to fly, jump, and tail walk several times before the real battle begins. On the captain's tackle, the fight may last from 20 to 40 minutes. When backcountry fishing for Snook, Redfish, Trout, and many other species, he also uses light spinning tackle and live bait (which he catches himself early in the morning). Snook is usually fished around the mangrove islands. You fish Trout in the shallow seagrass beds and potholes in bays, and Redfish in shallow calm waters around the mangrove islands, potholes, and swash channels.
