I stand out and what differentiates me from other Captains is all the little things that I pay attention to. It is not only competativeness, drive, & passion but also that I have experience & experiences, accolades and history fishing thousands of hours around the Great Lakes, different oceans, and fishing tournaments in various Great Lake states, with a high degree of success. Captain Jason Baldwin (JB) also has accolades that no other Great Lakes Captains have, (in Illinois) and only a few in all other Great Lakes combined... That is approved as a Captain by the International Game Fish Association (IGFA). I became an angler for the love of fishing. I never focused on records, I focused on having fun, catching & eating fish and releasing some fish to fight another day. My extended family and neighbors taught and helped me catch my first panfish. My father took me on a canoe / camping / fishing trip to Michigan when I was a kid, from there I quickly learned and started doing a lot on my own. Neighbors took me along when I was 12 or 13 to Canada for pike, walleye, small mouths & Lakers. Caught my first salmon off of my sail boat at age 13 or 14, an 18 pound King Salmon. Became a first mate on Salmon Charters in Grand Haven, MI at Chinook pier in 1984. Fished as a captain, 5 years at Chinook pier in Grand Haven & Saugatuck. Fished many tournaments during that time, several on some iconic Great Lakes Captains winning boats. Later I Captained boats out of St. Joseph, MI & various other ports. I have fun fished all over the USA & elsewhere. I became one of the youngest Captains on Lake Michigan in the 80's getting my 1st Captains license at age 19. I logged over 7,000 hours in my 20's & countless hours since. I have a near Coastal 6 pack (can operate 100 miles from shore in any State of the US). I've commercial fished in Alaska for Salmon & fished many different Oceans, lakes & species of fish worldwide. Come take a trip with me on our beautiful newer Tiara, I promise to work hard to make your trip enjoyable & successful. I'm meticulous in keeping the boat / gear, safe in great clean working order. Book & come fish with us today, I'll show you a great time. Some accolades that set me apart from all other Captains include the list below. Capt JB. PS I specialize in catching Silvers (any trout or salmon that is not a Lake Trout). Some Charter Boats fish for your Lake Trout limit (2 fish each) then quit, I fish for your limit of 5 fish for each person. Attributes setting myself apart, making me best Captain in Chicago. First, yes I have decades of experience and that is extremely important. I also have studied charter fishing, done research on and published for my Masters Thesis Master of Science Degree from Illinois State University, 'Factors effecting the Charterboat Industry, on the Western and Southern shores of Lake Michigan'. It was a study trying to discover why the industry declined and angler preferences. Therefore I have firsthand knowledge on studies and results of actual responses from customers as to what makes their trip important. This is an insight most if not all Captains don't have. My study was a 100 page thesis on the topic, giving insight via proof of scientificly completed research. I also am the only captain approved by the Association that keeps all Fresh and Saltwater records for all line classes the IGFA (International Game Fish Association). To become an IGFA approved Captain, you must pass their tests submit avidavits for and have a high level of character & other misc traits. Below are some of the accolades that make me proud and should help you in deciding with whom to fish. - Master of Science degree Illinois State University (wrote 100 page thesis, study on 'factors effecting the Charter boat fishing industry'). - Has scientific degree plus 45 years experience fishing worldwide - Safety is my #1 priority, boat, equipment, gear and all mechanical kept in immaculate best possible working condition. Preventative maintenance routine completed for all boats, therefore plan not to have a failure. However, we do have a plan in case of one. We have, - an EPIRB ( Electronic Positioning Indicating Radio Beacon ) if we use this device the Coast Guard sends a rescue helicopter. I believe I'm one of only 2 charter boats in IL to have an EPIRB. - We have Lalizas immersion life saving suits, which will protect against Hypothermia, exceeding the latest SOLAS specifications. We are the only Illinois charter boat to have immersion suits on board. - Top Dog Charter Boat Won both Chicago fishing tournaments, 2025 - Was on 2nd place team, Big Pond Brawl 2025 Waukegon - Won Zillion tournament 2025, first boat in decades to catch 5 species on tournament day, (species tournament). - Won Big King Salmon zillion tournament 2025 - Won 2nd place Zillion tournament 2024 showing continued consistency. - Won largest Coho salmon - Won or placed in top 5 several tournaments in the 1980's & 1990's equaling experiece, consistency, longevity and a vast working knowledge of fishing ports and different styles of catching fish. - Near coastal US Coast Guard '6 pack' license ie can go up to 100 miles offshore from any state in the US. - Only IGFA (Interngational Game Fish Association) approved Captain in Illinois - Only 1 of 7 IGFA captains in the 7 Great Lake States (NY, OH, MI, IN, IL, WI, MN). - Free fish cleaning - Free bags for fish fillets - Free leftover ice - You can take your fish home whole. Bring large heavy duty plastic bags, we do not steak nor gut fish. - No extra charge for gas if we run far - We go where we need to go to catch fish - Charter boat is licensed in Michigan, Indiana and Illinois we can fish any of those states waters at any time. We can and do on the same day, prior notice needed. - Passion is one of the hardest traits to measure. I have that for fishing (my whole life). Short story, I prescribe to doing all the little things all the time and doing them all in an elite manner. I choose to be elite ALL OF THE TIME. - I check and retie every knot every trip - I replace nicked leader or line when it needs it, not yearly or multi yearly. I have new line on my reels every year. - Did I mention the importance of keeping an immaculately clean boat? It gets cleaned after every trip. - Only the best equipment is on our boat To help you measure my passion, I aspire to the Nick Saban process of doing all the little stuff all the time at an elite level. I want every knot to be perfect. Sometimes if I think i've burned a knot, I'll retye it until its perfect. My goal is that if I get the new Lake Record King Salmon on the line.... about 50 lbs, I've tied every line, knot and lure and checked it more than once to make sure its perfect. We will have a chance to land that record breaking fish ... on every rod!!! I played college football at Illinois State University 1 AA. I began as a preferred walk on and made it, I earned a scholarship, I never quit, I endured through an entire coaching change (2nd year) and made it as a team Captain and starting center by my senior year. It took a lot of little things being done on a disciplined time line every day over 5 years. It was tuff but extremely rewarding. The Top Dog Charter Boat was a pleasure craft I turned it into a fishing machine. Winning both tournaments in 2025 proves that its fishing well. My previous lessons have taught me well and I'm fishing consistently at an elite level. Come out and see for yourself. Treat yourself today. Capt JB. Questions to ask other Captains Do you have an EPIRB on board? Do you quit fishing once you get your Lake Trout limit? What condition do you keep your boat? What kind of equipment do you use? Rods reels sonar radar flir etc line, ie is it new old etc. Otherwise just give me a call. Capt JB

    What a Fishing Trip!!!!

5 Hr Trip Weekday Afternoon 6 max3 adults

Took my grandson (14 years old) and his aunt out for a day of real fishing. We're all novices to the sport of fishing, catching only bluegills and a few bass in a small pond. But this was the "big time" on Lake Michigan. Capt Jason and his crew made every effort for us to catch fish...... and they came thru!!!! He gave us instructions on how to work the fish and how to reel in the catch; it was a workout!!!! We caught some good size Lake Trout and some salmon. It was a day and a trip that we'll never forget!!! We're already talking about another trip with Capt Jason later this season or early next year, setting our sites on catching some more big ones!!!

    Reported catch:
    Lake Trout
    Brown Trout
    Coho Salmon

    Amazing experience!

    5 Hr Trip WEEKEND AFTERNOON 6 Max2 adults1 child

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ We had such an incredible experience with Top Dog Fishing Charter! I brought my 15-year-old son and his friend, and it was hands down one of the highlights of their summer. From the moment we stepped on the boat, the crew made us feel welcome, safe, and completely taken care of. The captain was not only professional and experienced, but also patient and fun—he took the time to teach the boys some new techniques and kept the energy high the entire trip. They were both absolutely thrilled to catch some amazing fish and learn so much along the way. It’s not easy to impress teenagers, but Top Dog delivered a day they’ll be talking about for a long time. Highly recommend for families, especially if you’re looking for something memorable and exciting for your teens. We’ll definitely be back!

Thank you so much for booking a day on the water with us, we are so happy we could be a part of you and your sons (and his friend) memories. Also thank you for the good review, kind words and attention to the standard that I strive to maintain... not only in service and catching fish, but, in safety and also just having a fun time. Hope to see you back again some day soon. Give us a call any time. Capt JB.

What a great way to celebrate our Dad!

6 Hr Trip Weekend AFTERNOON 6 Max6 adults

Screaming from the rooftops that Top Dog Charters is the best! Captain Jason Baldwin and Jacques (or as we all called him, Son) were fantastic! Their energy, passion, dedication and hard work to ensure that we understood all aspects of the trip (equipment, technology, techniques, types of fish caught) were amazing and they were more than happy to answer all our questions. They worked tirelessly to get us setup to successfully catch fish and we appreciated every bit of it. We lost some but we caught a lot more than we lost. Let me also mention how clean they kept the charter, always spraying down after every catch. Grateful that they also cleaned, filleted and packed our catch. They definitely go the extra mile!! Thank you so much for making our first fishing trip and our Dad’s Father’s Day so special. We wish you much success and highly recommend you to all!

    Hard work pays off

5 Hr Trip Weekday Afternoon 6 max3 adults

Jason & Mike worked together like a team. The fishing was tough. However they kept after it. Different colors, changing depths, reversing direction… Then in the last hour it turned on with 5 more fish. Our last one was a 20 lbs Lake Trout. It took 20 minutes to get it in the boat. Those 2 worked hard and it made the difference of us catching 1-2 versus 7 on a tough day. Wonderful boat, great equipment, and good company. Would highly recommend this charter with Top Dog!

4 & 5 species on Multiple trips. Fishing

Sep 2, 2026 • Chicago
People, I spend extra in gas to go where the fish are. I don't just take you for Lake Trout. READ ALL THE REVIEWS LOOK at the photos.... Yes its that time of year where most charterboats will take you out, get you your limit of Lake trout which is 2 and bring you in with your ((("LIMIT" of Lake Trout))). I spend an extra $100 per day just in gas, minimum, and take US where we can hunt for and catch Brown Trout, King Salmon, Coho Salmon and Rainbow (steelhead) Trout (Silver Fish) along with catching your limit of Lake Trout. You are able to catch 5 fish per person and I spent the hours that you booked doing just that. See the photos, my boat and I HUNT anbd target "Silver" fish, yes I catch Lake Trout too but we target SILVERS. The fishing has been fantastic all year for the most part. I have had several trips with 4 and 5 species caught. We've caught more brown trout than all the rest of the years combined and we focus our trips targeting silver fish.... look at my photos we catch fish. Last handfull of trips have been fantastic getting limits of trout along with many silvers including BIG Brown Trout 203 yr Kings, some coho and big Rainbow trout. Come fishing with the Top Dog, we won both tournaments two years in a row from DOWNTOWN CHICAGO ILLINOIS. We caught 5 speceis two years in a row on tournament day for the Captains Memorial first boat to do that in 30 plus years if ever! We also won the FISH THIS tournament and won by 25 plus pounds two years in a row by catching and weighing only SILVER FISH!!! Two years in a row, 2025 and 2026 and we catch big fish. Caught largest COHO RAINBOW AND LAKER in this Captains Memorial and largest KING in 2025 Captains memorial and largest Coho in 2023 and 2022 and largest Laker in 2024 along with 2nd in 2024 in Captains memorial (AKA Zillion),. Fishing out of BELMONT HARBOR, Downtown Chicago is some of the best FISHING Lake Michigan! Go with the Top Dog Book today FISHING IS FANTASTIC RIGHT NOW. ONLY A FEW DAYS LEFT FOR 2026.

Won both Chicago tournaments again!

Jul 11, 2026 • Chicago
Fishing goes from good to fantastic lately. Good only because sometimes you have to figure out the bite, but we've had all rods popping when you go through a school. Important news flash: On July 11, 2026 We won the "Fish This" tournament out of Montrose Harbor for the 2nd year in a row. Rules this year were catch and weigh 15 silvers only. We won by catching 11 fish and approximately 25 lbs more fish than our nearest competitor. Top Dog Charters has won both tournaments out of Chicago now 2 yrs in a row **hidden content**. That is consistent fishing. Right now, as of this writing, King Salmon are here and we are catching 2 to 6 every trip. One out of three trips has a little tougher bite and you have to take what you can get. But overall we've had some line screaming Kings on each trip. We are fishing a couple different spots from 70 feet of water out to 150 feet of water. The surface temps have gone way up so the heavier coppers are starting to work better and the downriggers 40 fow and below are going good, as are the downriggers. The next 3-4 weeks should be some of the best fishing all year with big Kings around look to get out soon. I was out yesterday on a fun and scouting trip and got some plugs to go and caught a few knarly fish and released several. Book us today to get your share of the fun. Thanks for looking, call Top Dog Charters Today. Capt JB

KINGS are here! We've caught several now

Jun 17, 2026 • Chicago
KINGS (Chinook Salmon) are here. We had a line ripper today. Wanted to get some fresh salmon so I did a short trip. I had at least 18 bites and released many coho. Then we got him on the line a big ole King line ripping salmon. He tore off 80 to 100 yards of line and then shorter amounts several times. I finally got him in and netted and the wind hit. I like to soak my king salmon in teraki and char gril them but don't over do it. Make sure they are moist inside and its fabulous. I kept a limit of five fish. I did not try for Lake Trout and still got three species... King Salmon, Coho Salmon, and I released one Rainbow trout. Very beautidul all of them and even better on the Grill. Come fishing with Capt JB we'll get you some fish.

Ladies day on Lake Michigan

Jun 13, 2026 • Chicago
We had a ladies day on Lake Michigan. The fishing for the past couple weeks has been phenominal. We only fished a few hours for these 12 for fantastic grilling/eating. The ladies each caught plenty so we came in early. The fish have been rather close to shore for this time of year. They are in 40-50 feet of water. The fish are biting on just about anything you put down but coho key on stubby dodgers and flys. However, the spoon bite has been great too. From Steelhead on the surface to Brown Trout on the bottom the fishing has been lights out. Call us today and come get you some.

The silver fiish are still biting, Steel

Jun 13, 2026 • Chicago
The storm a week or so ago stirred up the lake and pushed colder water near shore. We don't have to go near as far, right now the fish are in 50 to 75 feet of water and they are hungry. Saturday we had an all lady crew (not the one in the photo) but similar catch. We caught 12 fish, 1 brown trout, 1 rainbow trout and 10 coho. Great eaters. There are a few kings around and this crew did not want Lake Trout. We can travel a little furthor out into the Lake if you want Lake Trout and get them. These fish bit just about everything we threw at them. spoons flys and more. Cmon fishing on the top dog. We are booking up the last part of June quick so get your inquiry in fast. We are at Belmont Harbor F dock slip F-25. 3600 recreation drive Chicago IL or give me a call. Capt JB

Colorado Houndswomen catch big Rainbows

May 17, 2026 • Chicago
Hello, I was fortunate enough to take three ladies from the Colorado houndsmen assoc fishing on May 17th. We ran north of Belmont Harbor Chicago (where I moore the boat), locating colder surface water. We set in north of Wilimette harbor where there was a big drop in temps. We caught a 3 person limit of 11 coho along with 4 beautiful Rainbow Trout. The largest each of the 3 ladies had ever caught. Various Stubby dodgers red, orange, fire dot along with various peanut flys worked well. The Rainbow trout hit surfice lures thin fins red w black squiggleys. Overall a great trip, we fished 25-45 feet of water from 2.5 to 3 mph.
