Background
I've been told they have pictures of me fishing in a mud puddle in the back yard at 5 years old (and catching fish) though I've never seen these pictures. After serving 20 years in the US Navy, traveling and fishing all over the world, and, as a part time job, running the Navy's charter boat for Moral ,Welfare and Recreation in Bermuda for 3 years I retired in '90 and became a charter fishing boat owner/operator. I have literally fished all over the world. I have been lucky enough to fish for and catch Pacific Blue marlin in Hawaii and Atlantic Blue's in Bermuda, the Bahama's, Texas and Florida. I've caught sailfish in Mexico, Texas, the Bahama's and Florida as well. Now I specialize in teaching/instructing young (and not so young) anglers in light and medium tackle live bait trolling techniques, bottom fishing and light spinning tackle (live and plastic bait) fishing in the ICW and its feeder creeks.
Techniques
I specialize in light tackle/live bait trolling for King Mackerel, Barracuda, Cobia , Greater Amberjack and Little Tunny (aka bonita) with the occasional Mahi-Mahi and Sailfish as well as bottom fishing for several snapper and grouper species (during the cooler months) on the beach and near shore artificial reefs. I also light tackle (20# spinning gear) fish for sharks and tarpon behind the shrimp boats during the summer months. Year 'round I fish the ICW (river) and it's feeder creeks for speckled trout, red fish, flounder and black drum (food fish) as well as lady fish, jack cravelle and blue fish (sport fish).

Went fishing on Wednesday, March 15, 2017

Capt Guy was great, since our week in St Augustine had some rain and wind, and even got a little cold, he worked the schedule for the best time for our trip, he was very flexible and made the experience great.  Our goal was for our daughters to have a great time and just fish, Capt Guy will adjust to what you want and made it enjoyable.  We went to 3 different locations and caught a variety of fish, all good size (stayed in the Inter-coastal).  After our trip Capt Guy cleaned and filleted all the fish and we had a great meal that night…and the next day!  We caught and released a lot of fish too…  If I had to mention a constructive criticism it would be that we had 5 people on our trip, the boat is a good size but it was crowded and we had a hard time casting with so many people in a small area.  But overall it was a great trip and would recommend.

Had a very good trip with Gary and the crew. First timers are always fun as catching the bait with Sabiki’s is the first big deal and then catching the fish is a good topper. We had a slow time or two during the day but ended with a very respectable catch of king mackerel, bonita and a lot of puppy sharks (Atlantic Sharpnose - all released). I look forward to our next adventure. See you on the pond - Capt. Guy

One of the best “4” hour trips on record. We actually only fished 3 hours due to a little “mal de mare”. I’m sure it looked like a circus when we had 4 cobia swim up to the boat (we caught all of them). The kingfish also were on the bite. Outstanding fishing and we all learned something making it a fine fishing day.

Capt. Spear worked diligently over the course of our charter to put me on fish despite it being an admittedly poor time of the year for fishing. We caught plenty of fish but with keepers being few and far between. A total of 6 different species were caught with bluefish being numerous and providing most of the action. If I am ever back in St. Augustine I would certainly not hesitate to fish with Capt. Spear again.

Capt Guy put us on a lot of fish, 5 Blue fish, 7 trout and 3 Red Fish and those were just the keepers. I lost track of how many overall we caught. In addition there were sea bass and black drum. Me and my father in law wanted to try some fishing in St. Augustine, and with this we found Misstress charters which looked very promising. We’re from Norway, so this would for us be a unique experience. I brought my own fly fishing equipment, as the captain did not have this, but this proved not to be a good choice. It was quite hard to get any fish to be lured by a fly, and the captain unfortunately didn’t have any fly fishing experience at this particular river. My father in law caught quite a lot of fish using live bait, so in all the trip was a success for him. Next time we will definitely use the same charters, but instead try off shore fishing, I think this will be a lot more fun.

This was our first fishing charter out of St. Augustine. We have found our boat for all of our visits to this area in Florida. Capt Guy was just awesome. Our charter was originally scheduled for off shore but Capt Guy was gracious enough to let us change to inshore due to some rough seas the day of our trip. We spent 5 hours inshore and took home 13 flounder and 3 mangrove snappers. We dodged some rain but Capt Guy put us on the best spot and we had a blast fishing with him. We will most certainly fish with Capt Guy on the MisStress on all of our visits to St Augustine….Bob Minor

Fishing was outstanding with Bob and family. We fished the edges of a couple of storms and right down the middle of one. I gave the option of going in early (or not going at all due to weather) - option - let’s go fishing, the fish are already wet. We went through a lot of bait yesterday. As the pic shows the flatfish were on fire. We also caught a bunch of mangrove snapper but most were short.  I look forward to our next trip. Capt. Guy

Capt. Guy Spear really went the extra mile to give us the fishing experience we were looking for. It took us a little longer to kind and net our fresh bait so Guy added the time to the end of the trip. He didn’t have to do that… He may own the boat but in the end, he was just like us, out to catch fish. Everyone on the boat caught fish. Fantastic trip!!! Thanks Guy!!

Sometimes the bait is easy and sometimes it isn’t. That day it wasn’t. I’ll stay at it (or go to plan B - trolling strip baits and squid, which is what we do when plan A fails). I usually allow a 1/2 hour to catch bait, if it takes longer than that we go on my time. I really like to fish live bait. In fact, I really like to fish, period. It was great fishing with y’all and I look forward to our next trip. See you on the pond, Capt. Guy

Due to weather we had to change the date of our fishing trip from Tuesday to Thursday Aug 6th. Capt Guy was very accommodating. We had great weather and a great trip. Of all the boats out of that harbor and fishing the same area, we caught the most and biggest fish. He put us on the fish early with the biggest fish, a 25lb King our first fish hooked. We caught 6 more in the 10 lb range. After a few trash fish that we quickly release, just as we were about to wrap up our 4 hour trip we hooked what we thought was a large shark. An hour and half later we got the shark to the side of the boat and released it and headed home. Capt Guy was a real troop, lots of patience and never complained about staying out past out time. Capt Guy is the experience fisherman you want when you want to catch fish. I highly recommend him and will be rebooking another trip in the coming months.

Tried a little of everything that day including bottom fishing (where the flounder came from). Most of what we did was live bait troll thus the king mackerel, cobia, bonita, and sharks. Had a ball fishing with you guy’s. Capt. Guy

Trip went good. Caught some mackerel, barracuda, and a few fish that were too big for the gear we were using. Charter was excellent.

Had a good time fishing with Tristan and his crew. And, Yes, we did have a couple of fish we couldn’t turn on 20# Tournament tackle (probably very large Jack Cravalle or Amberjack) but that’s sport fishing.

My daughter and I had a great time offshore fishing on the MisStress.  Captain Spear was very helpful and went out of his way to make sure we caught a lot of fish and had fun.  I look forward to the next fishing trip on the MisStress.

Had a lot of fun and the fish bit well. Quick study. Those giant bonita (little tunny) are a real pull on light tackle. Look forward to your return. Capt. Guy

Capt. Guy was great, even though my luck wasn’t the best he taught me some good fishing techniques which landed some flounder and some reds. He comes highly recommended.

Had a lot of fun with Charlie. Teaching is part of the game, fast learner.
