I’m really sorry that you feel this way, but you booked a 3/4 day Coronado Island trip and as I explained to you over the phone prior to your trip, there was virtually no chance of catching bluefin or yellowfin at the islands that day. After discussion with your group and explaining the commitment that offshore fishing was, you guys decided you wanted to go offshore. I did this at no extra charge, even though this is a much more costly trip for me. I got you on bluefin right away. Once we got bit, you didn’t get up out of your chair and did not seem ready to fight at all. This allowed the fish to move towards the bow and under the boat where the line chafed then broke. Bluefin fishing requires active fighting, and as you remained in the chair, the fish ran under the boat and the line chafed against the bottom of the boat and broke.

After trolling for just one hour, your group decided that you’d prefer fishing at the islands, even though there was no chance of catching your intended fish. At the islands, we encountered 20+ knot winds, which makes fishing difficult. Notwithstanding the odds, I was able to keep you on fish all day. Your group caught a variety of fish, 27 total, with 17 keepers. Some fish do have to be measured to ensure that they are legal, and it would be irresponsible of me not to do that. I’m sorry the circumstances ruled tuna out of your fish count, but you certainly did not go home empty handed.

My boat and equipment are well-maintained and more than capable for Southern California offshore fishing. I’ve attached a picture of a trip just a few days later where we stayed offshore all day, pulling in 13 legal yellowtail and a yellowfin. It’s really important to book a trip that aligns with your goals. If you want tuna, book a tuna trip. Ask your captain about his gear. For example, we do not use steel lines here as Pacific Bluefin tend to be line shy if the line is too heavy, metallic, and visible. A fighting chair is not used because you have to actively fish around the boat and be mobile, sometimes with multiple people hooked up. We use fighting belts instead, which I have, but it’s not something you could have used in your seated position.

Again, I’m sorry this trip did not meet your expectations, but you also have to understand that we worked very hard to get you on fish, which we did, and a review like this seems a little misinformed and unfair to our operation.
