Grandson of a professional fisherman, fishing has been in my blood since birth. First of all, it is my passion and I've been fishing professionally for more than 20 years. I will be pleased to share my knowledge of fishing in the Mauritian waters with you and maybe even learn something from you.
Techniques
Whenever possible I like to do around 3 hours of livebaiting along the drop off in the morning and lure trolling to cover more ground afterwards.However,there are some times of the year when live bait is scarce and we troll with lures only.

We went out with our customer targeting any hungry gamefish.We came across some schools of skipjacks and managed to catch 2 and shortly afterwards all the surface activity stopped. We moved to the deeper waters and saw a school of dorados and caught 4 for 5 strikes and a bit later we caught a wahoo and lost 2.

Being off season.We headed out in search of the skipjack tuna schools that were feeding along the dropoff recently in hope of catching some and do some live baiting but were very lucky to get a bite on the long corner lure early into the trip. We immediately knew it was a marlin because of the speed at which line was coming off the reel .Then the fish started making his majestic jumps.Our customer, Mr Thomas, was very happy as it was his first marlin.After some time the rare Striped Marlin was onboard.Lucky off season ....why not!

The Danish family were out with us on a very nice day.After that the customer's have had their share of fun catching the skipjack tunas the crew decided to do some live baiting for marlin.We had a strike and Mr Matthijs got on the fighting chair.It was a hammerhead shark that had taken the live skipjack.At 350 lbs it gave a nice fight and it was released afterwards. Sharks are now ptotected in Mauritius and cannot be boated and commercialised .

After some days of bad weather conditions we were finally able to go out. The wind dropped and there was just a very light chop.We found that there were quite a lot of seabirds flying in the area indicating that the skipjack tunas were not far. We found a school and caught some but they quite picky on the bite so we decided to troll with lures around that school. It turned out to be a good decision as five minutes later a blue marlin took our long rigger lure .Our customer for that trip, Mr Matt,got on the fighting chair and it was game on. After a nice fight the fish was pulled onboard. Nice sea,sun out,marlin in the boat...,a wonderful winter day it was for Mr Matt,his wife and their two sons

With the warm waters moving in late during the season,we went out on this off season trip with water temperatures way higher than average. The sea was full of seaweed and water was dirty. Not ideal conditions but we managed ti catch a couple of small bonitos and a nice dorado. They are expected to show up in numbers when the wind picks up with the usual winter anti-cyclones coming.

The half day trip ended later than scheduled as we had a strike on the way in. The fish took the short rigger lure and started to make big leaps out of the water while pulling line out of the reel very fast. Our South Aftican customers onboard were overwhelmed by the action as it had been a very quiet morning. After fighting hard ,the blue marlin went deep and died.It took another couple of hours to be able to get the fish at the surface.Luckily the line did not break under the extreme pressure and sharks did not take their share. The big blue marlin was first estimated at around 500 lbs but after the weighing it was closer to 650 lbs. Nice one for an end of season...
