- Background
- I started my fishing career aged 10. My first boat was an 8' plywood dingy that I found after a big storm, full of gravel on Adelaide Beach, WA. I started fishing all summer long for whatever would bite – mostly bottom fish. Then, after lots of trial and error, I learned how to catch King Salmon and I fell in love with the sport. Growing up in the Seattle area I always heard about Alaska and all the untouched fishing that it had to offer so right out of High School I got a job commercial fishing for Pink, Chum, and Red Salmon. It was a great experience but it wasn't what I really wanted to do. So I got another job on a private Sportfisher, fishing all over Alaska from Ketchikan to Kodiak and I worked for that Company for 4 years. In that time, I moved up from deck hand to first mate, and then Captain. I settled down in Homer, because we have great fishing year-round. I have really learned how to perfect my techniques over the last 30 years.
- Techniques
- I like all kinds but really like bouncing jigs on the bottom for Halibut and Rock fish either drifting with the tide or anchor up on structure and bounce baits and let them come to you. And I really like trolling with Down Riggers for King salmon and Silver Salmon the method is called controlled depth fishing it is very effective and I have really been able to perfect it over the last 30 years.
