Jason Coffrin

Captain Jason 'Butterfly' Coffrin is no stranger to the waters of Flamingo and Carrillo, Costa Rica. After spending 11 years guiding in the region before retiring in 2017, he continued to expand his expertise across the globe, fishing the Pacific waters of Hawaii alongside Capt. Russel Tanaka of Magic Sportfishing, exploring Fiji with Capt. Mike Hennessey, and fishing the Bahamian islands aboard multiple vessels. With three offshore world records to his name—including two sailfish and one marlin—as well as an unofficial 157 lb roosterfish and two marlin weighing over 500 lb, one blue and one black, Capt. Coffrin has established a strong reputation as a big-game fishing expert. His achievements also include releasing 65 blue marlin, 17 black marlin, 39 striped marlin, and over 1,000 sailfish. He also released three IGFA billfish in the Royal Slam, achieving the fastest time ever recorded. Among his most meaningful experiences was his friendship and mentorship with the late Capt. Bart Miller of Black Bart Lures. Together, they fished the Bahamas and West Palm Beach and won Capt. Miller's final marlin tournament. From casual bass trips to conversations over burgers and beers, Capt. Coffrin gained valuable knowledge that continues to shape his approach to fishing. His experience has also been featured in Fish Monster Magazine for four years, as well as on Got Fish Got Rum Radio and NBC Sports Radio. Now back in Costa Rica, Capt. Coffrin brings his passion, knowledge, and dedication to Mr. Trigger Sportfishing.
