Te Anau, New Zealand
- Background
- Matt Butler is a proud kiwi and a passionate, energetic fly fishing guide based out of Wanaka, New Zealand. Originally from the North Island, Matt moved south to immerse himself in the incredible Fly Fishing and diversity that the South Island has to offer and spends most of his time exploring the numerous waters and attractions that the amazing landscape has to offer. Matt is also a member of the New Zealand Professional Fishing Guides Association and is therefore equipped with all the necessary permits and safety requirements to guide on all waters throughout the country.
- Techniques
- Starting to fly fish at age 12, with no fishermen in the family, Matt was mostly self taught after being introduced to the sport when living in the South Island. He then spent most of his schooling years learning and exploring the waters around the central North Island. Matt uses multiple methods when on the water but generally focuses his efforts on upstream dry fly/nymph fishing to sighted fish and adapts his methods where necessary. “I have a strong passion for all things fly fishing but I am most in my element when hunting trout in clear waters that require careful stalking and spotting. I pride myself on my fish spotting abilities and the decisions required to successfully hookup”
