Background
I am from a local family who has been exposed to fishing since 8 years of age. My father became my inspiration to start operating on fishing charters in the Maldives. Today we have 2 vessels operating within the Maldives and 3rd vessel, Fishing Dhoni is getting ready by end of March 2015. Hoping to provide better night fishing and live bait fishing in Vaavu Atoll.

Hugely disappointed. Two words sum up my experience with this charter. To begin with the boat didn’t match up to the images on the website. There are clear pictures of seating on either side of the boat including a fighting seat neither of which were there. Then there was no fish finder. I had responded to a query from the owner about the types of fishing I wanted to do (in essence I wanted to try all) but he informed his crew to come prepared for just popping. The fishing equipment was dismal and the crew struggled to assemble them and resorted to using bits of plastic to hold the rods together. There was very little space for 2 anglers (unless you’re highly experienced) to fish from the boat. The crew then went on to do fishing themselves and we were just watching. I didn’t sign up to pay $1100 to watch them fish. The key person of the crew had bad attitude and was arrogant. We eventually cancelled the trip 2 hours into it after speaking with Raifu who said he needs to pay his crew and for fuel. In the end we still ended up paying $660 for a complete rip off trip. Sorry but my sincerest advice to bookers is to give this charter a complete miss unless you have zero expectations and are a world class popper. They didn’t have any backup plan and all they seemed keen to do in the end was collect the payment.

It is unfortunate that the client wasn’t happy about the trip. However, it was the same boat with some renovations earlier this year. This includes removal of some seats (at the back) for more deck space for fishing and also change in top canvas to fiber glass roofing. Seating is still available in the boat on the higher deck.  The fighting chair was removed for the trip to make more deck space for easier casting as what we understood from the email communication was that the client was interested in popping when we asked about the types of fishing he would like to experience. As per the client’s email: “I’m looking or rather hoping to catch big fish so once again I’ll take your advice on this. I’ve tried trolling for dorado and have caught a few decent ones so I don’t mind that. Never tried popping but have done spinner casting in rivers so I don’t mind trying popping for GT. I’m not so fond of jigging since it’s a lot of hard work ha ha but if that’s the only way to go I’ll do it. I’ll look to you for guidance”

Also attached are pictures of the boat after renovation.

Regarding the fish finder, we agree it was not onboard during the trip, as our crew is quite experienced in the area. Regarding the fishing equipment and our crew, we have never had such feedback from our clients in any of our previous trips and its the same equipment and crew on this trip.

Regarding payment, we collected $500 from the client as it was 2 hours into the trip when client inquired about the boat. This was to cover part of the expenses we have incurred in preparing for trip. at this time we explained to the client that it was the same boat and that from his email what we understood was that he would like to go for popping. We also asked what he would like to do at the time, and the response was to cut the trip short and drop him back to the island.

Once again it is unfortunate that the client was not happy and we would like to improve with the feedback. It is also our fault that we have not updated the pictures in the website after the renovation works of the boat. We will continue to work with our crew to provide a better service and fishing experience.

Although we didn’t Catch a lot ( 1 x 20kg GT & 1 nice emporer) we had an enjoyable morning with the guys on mahuey, we didn’t stay in one spot for long, we were always on the move lookin for fish, tried plenty of spots with both popping and jigging, maybe the fish just weren’t hungry!!! Great crew!! Would recommend !

Great boat and crew who worked hard to find the fish which were hard on the day. The gear used was of low quality and i lost a big red bass as the line snapped from being too frail or old. Braid line needs to be changed after a while. We did however manage to find some nice GTs and my wife caught a nice fish of around 11kg. Her first GT. We were quite happy with that. Abit more practice on finding the fish recommending the best time to go which is on tide changes and some better gear with sharper hooks. Not rusty hooks. And this charter will be very good. Also had no fish finder/depth sounder on board. Any professional outfit needs one of these to find fish cosistently. I suggest the crew invest in a quality depth sounder.

Great trip, the crew is really helpfull and really makes effort to put you onto fish. Our trip was supposed to be popping only but because of the waves and very poor results on poppers (only 2 small GT) we switched to jigging which was more productive that day (few groupers and barracudas and two big ones that got away).

Our 4 persons group experiensed two nice popping days areas nearby Male. Crew was 90% “on the game” with fisherman and rest of the time in telephone:) Fish couth were very small but there was couple of good hits. One really suprising thing was that crew killed most of the fish, even small ones, if we didnt want to release them. This way you really dont have to say or explain enything where or why fishes are not biting :)
Enyway, thanks for the two nice days on the sea! :)

We found the Captain and Crew of Mahuey to be courteous and helpful. We were lucky to have a beautiful day to fish, considering the morning started out windy and overcast. We will be back.

The fishing trip was fantastic. For a couple of hours, we manage to landed a few good fish.

Thanks to the captain, Hassan and his crew for the fun trip. I understand for the a bit rough water/wind condition, but for 4 hours of session, that can be considered good enough. It’s more to light and easy session with family. I’m sure for next time, I’ll took a longer session.

As for the fish we took, we grill it and shared with the Banyan Tree guest (well the fish is too much for 2 adults haha).

Thanks again to the crew for their good service and warm hospitality.

Attach some of the pictures taken by my wife during the trip.
