Golden Season in the Rรญo de la Plata: An
Golden Season in the Rรญo de la Plata: An
Dec 2, 2024 Buenos Aires
The **Rรญo de la Plata** season is off to an incredible start, giving anglers an unforgettable experience with our star fish: the **Golden Dorado**. While every type of fishing has its charm, this majestic predator always steals the show. A Day Full of Action From the first cast, the excitement was real. We started off using shallow-running lures, and within a few tries, the first dorados were already hooked. Later, we switched to deeper diving lures (size 1 and 2) to target the bigger onesโ€”and boy, did it pay off! The quality of the catches here easily matches the ones from the Paranรก River. We explored different spots along the river, and to our surprise, dorados were everywhere. It was a true fishing frenzy! The Secrets of Rรญo de la Plata This massive river, with its unique basin-like shape and mix of shallow and deep areas, requires some local know-how to find where the predators are feeding. The bites are classic dorado style: subtle pulls of one or two meters before one brave fish takes off with the bait. Thatโ€™s the moment to actโ€”lock the reel, tighten the line, and set the hook hard. If the dorado gets away, no worriesโ€”leave the lure still, wait a few minutes, and try again. The sight of a golden dorado leaping out of the water is worth every effort! Rolling with the Conditions The day brought some southeast winds, causing a double tide rise. Fishing the sandbanks was pointless in those conditions, so we took shelter in a nearby creek. Casting near the reeds, we caught a baby surubรญ and a few more dorados. As the water settled, we headed back out, soaking in the stunning views of Buenos Aires from the river. Less than an hour later, we were back at the marina with at least six dorados eachโ€”plus a bunch of patรญes. More Than Just Fishing The Rรญo de la Plata offers more than just great catchesโ€”itโ€™s a chance to enjoy breathtaking views of the city from the water. Whether youโ€™re a beginner or a seasoned angler, this is an experience you wonโ€™t forget. Come join us for your own golden adventure in the Rรญo de la Plata!

Today, we're delving into the captivating world of the tararira. Recently, we were contacted by a foreign company looking to make the most of their free day during a business stay in Argentina with an exciting 6-hour fishing excursion. We chose to take them to an exclusive spot for our anglers, where we captured these amazing fighting creatures. The balmy temperatures bestowed upon us a day replete with angling, leisurely strolls, shared tales, all crowned with the joy of a laid-back ambiance. Our camaraderie continued over a delectable meal and beers, the perfect companions to our angling **hidden content**, all set against the backdrop of our river's unique panorama. Allow me to regale you with some insights into this remarkable species. The tararira, masters of repose, thrive on a varied diet encompassing fish, birds, rodents, amphibians, insects, and shrimp, among other delectable morsels. Renowned for their aggressive hunting style, armed with robust jaws and razor-sharp teeth, these creatures boast a square head and an almost prehistoric visage. Unapologetically territorial, they boast a lifespan of eight to twelve years, with instances in the Amazon reaching a venerable twenty years. Sporting a muscular physique that propels them through the water with remarkable speed, they flaunt a diverse palette of colors ranging from earthy browns and greens to mesmerizing shades of blue. For those in Buenos Aires yearning for a day of nature-infused fishing, this is the ideal choice. We eagerly await your presence!

The lemon fish season is kicking off, our guide gave us the heads-up, down on the Atlantic coast, in the mix of offerings from this buzzing touristy city. And when he said "citrus," he meant getting into the action with lemon fish, that feisty opponent that anglers love for the thrill and the tasty rewards. They'd already pulled in some catches in the previous days, but with a weekend that was basically a windstorm disaster across Buenos Aires province, they decided to go all-in for a bunch of lemon fish. To do that, they went out with jigs, going after the fast swimmers and other bottom-dwellers. They did pretty darn well, considering it's just the start of the season. Bagged themselves 17 lemon fish. The crew of anglers had a blast, and around noon, which is usually a tricky time, they switched it up to some bottom fishing action, still using those trusty jigs instead of the typical bait. With this setupโ€”lighter gear and braided lineโ€”they also hauled in some salmon, grouper, sea bass, and porgies. Picture this: runs, chaos, and fishing rods bending like they're doing yoga, all happening in this angler's paradise. You got your variety โ€“ salmon, grouper, sea bass, porgy, lemon fish, bonito, anchovy, and the classics like corvina, hake, anchovy, pampanito, and rays. Plus, if you're up for it, mixing it up with dogfish and sharks, but remember, those go back in the water. They're out there on a 10.5-meter cruiser, decked out with a bathroom, kitchen, cabin, and a chill spot at the back where up to 10 fishing fanatics can get in on the action. They throw in breakfast, fishing gear, club access, and the bait โ€“ it's all part of the deal. For its fishing, we use rods ranging from 20 to 30 pounds, equipped with baitcasting reels loaded with 45/50 mm nylon or 0.20/0.22 mm multifilament. It's a demanding type of fishing, where the guides need to work consistently, especially when using multifilament. The species allows for different techniques (trolling, spinning, jigging), depending on the circumstances and fishing location. The lemon fish party is just beginning, and we'll have several months of good lemon fish catches, one of the standout species in the Argentine Sea, no doubt.

In the past couple of years, we've been seeing some epic fish action in the Rรญo de la Plata. Loads of youngsters are hanging out in the estuary, and we've got these big schools of fish cruising down from upstream, loving life thanks to the heavy rains up north in Argentina. Mother Nature, you know, she throws surprises our way, and right now, we've got this sweet opportunity to snag some dorado, the rockstar of fish, just a hop and a skip from home. It's not an everyday thing, but today, it's on! We kick off from Puerto Norte, right by the aeroparque, taking the afternoon shift from 2 to 7 pm. It's a new move for the summer when the heat is cranked up. Five hours on the water are more than enough, considering the rods are practically buzzing from all the action. We cruise south, pointing towards the port, looking for those sweet fishing spots along the shore. Saturday's forecast was a bit iffy, some rain threat that eventually ghosted away. Once we hit the spot, we busted out the Storm Arashi lure, basically catnip for dorados. First few meters in, bam, got a bite that bent the rod. Third leap, and the dorado swiped my lure, making me switch to one with rattling. That worked like a charm, just like the short paddle ones. Most bites came from chucking towards the coast, against the rocks or at metal structures. They hit hard in the first few meters, but once you're away from the shore, the bite game weakens. The wild twist of the day was hooking a massive sabalo that went for the lure, crazy, but true. Remember, it's all catch-and-release fishing. Big point here is, it's a team effort. You gotta position the boat just right so all the anglers can throw their lines like pros. The electric motor is your best bud to make that happen. Plus, your casts need to be on the money. On this outing, we dealt with a crazy ebb, which meant less action. But we kept on the hunt, looking for new spots or hitting up the ones we'd checked before, making it a killer day of fishing with lures for one of Argentina's sportiest species, all practically in our backyard.

November 2023
November 2023
Nov 22, 2023 Buenos Aires
We kicked off the golden dorado season in Buenos Aires, and I want to share how our latest outing went! It was in November 2023, and we started the day in an unusual way for Rio de la Plata fishermen: stepping off the boat to walk through dense vegetation. Our initial goal was the tarariras, a strong and elusive fish. In this estuary, where the river changes direction, and the water level varies a meter four times a day, the conditions are quite a challenge. High waters indicate the presence of dorados or palometones, but they often hide in inaccessible places. With the right scent and flavor, we can attract the tarariras, but it's a bit more complicated with fly fishing. In these conditions, we need the estuary to be low, and the vegetation dry so that the tarariras gather in the trenches. We started fishing with light gear, but the surprise came when we found tarariras and doradillos at the same time. We could detect the doradillos by their attacks and wakes while patrolling. In such small areas, we only catch two or three before moving to another fishing spot. As the bank dried up, the tarariras became more active, especially the larger ones from 2 to 3 kg. It was intense, with the tarariras smashing the surface with jumps and tail slaps. After lunch, we waded up to our necks and went to fish for dorados on the rocks of the Uruguayan coast. We tried a new anchoring technique to comb the stones surgically, varying speeds and angles in the presentation of the streamers. We switched from floating lines to sinking lines to cover different levels of the water column. The dorados increased in size, with several specimens averaging 2 kg, some approaching 4 kg, and a giant of 5 kg that broke free in the first jump. The Rio de la Plata is on fire this year, so let's make the most of it! We look forward to welcoming you to enjoy this unforgettable fishing season in all its forms. Don't miss out! These photos are from outings in recent days with anglers from Fishing Booker.
